New Latin Wave Introducing a New York audience to what's happening in the Latinx cultural multiverse

Dedicated to celebrating the most current and compelling voices in Latinx art, music, literature and film, New Latin Wave is more than a cultural festival; it’s a multidisciplinary symposium that seeks to open conversations about Latinx and Latin American contributions and identity in the United States by creating a platform for performers, writers and artists. Now in its second year, New Latin Wa

ve will come to Brooklyn Bazaar in Greenpoint on Sunday, October 22 for a day of art and ideas featuring a book and zine fair, a juried video art show, a mini-film fest and a concert. The festival's ultimate goal is to be a resource for discovery and exchange for those both within and outside the Latinx community in New York City and to open up space for ongoing dialogue. The New Latin Wave launched last year in October, kicking off Hispanic Heritage Month with a sold out show at the Mercury Lounge featuring Xenia Rubinos and Ela Minus. Its mission to introduce a New York audience to what’s happening in the Latinx cultural multiverse, the series of ten events brought together 1000+ people for performances, screenings and talks by Latinx artists, creators, and thinkers in the fields of art, cinema, gastronomy, journalism, literature and music.

PLAYBOOK is a conversation series featuring Latin American artists, curators, and cultural workers as they share their lived experiences under dictatorships. This New Latin Wave initiative delves into personal narratives, historical contexts, the enduring impact of authoritarian regimes, and the role of arts and culture as a form of resistance.

The term “playbook” refers both to the tactical methods used by dictators to seize and maintain power, and to the strategies of resistance often led by artists at the forefront. Organized as a series of moderated discussions with a wide range of voices and perspectives, this conversation is moderated by Verónica Bayetti Flores (Managing Partner at Center for Advancing Innovative Policy) and will feature Natasha Tiniacos (Poet) Sokio (Composer), and Martín Touzón (Artist), who has works on view at Kates-Ferri Projects

This Sunday 11, join us for The Long Table, a participatory performance installation conceived by artist Lois Weaver, designed to blur the line between public dialogue and private conversation. Borrowing the familiar format of a dinner party, it offers a space for informal yet meaningful exchange on pressing issues—inviting artists, activists, academics, and community members to gather around a shared table and speak freely. In this iteration, guests are invited to reflect on the role of the artist as a visionary—someone who looks to the future with hope and dares to imagine new possibilities. The table will be facilitated by Paloma Estevez, Director of Artistic Programming at Lincoln Center.

Staged Reading: Magnetic Tape N19

Part of Dignidad, 2018–ongoing, a multimedia project by artist María Verónica San Martín, this staged reading, presented in collaboration with New Latin Wave, brings to life the transcription of secret telephone recordings from Colonia Dignidad in 1978. An isolated colony established in Chile by ex-nazi agents, Colonia Dignidad became notorious for the internment, torture, and murder of dissidents during the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet.

The reading will feature Leonardo Bravo (Director of Public Engagement at MoMA and Artist) Ian Cofre (Curator and Writer), Fabrizio Copano (Comedian), and María Verónica San Martín (Artist).
