NGO Working Group on Women, Peace and Security Accentuating women’s voices at the UN Security Council, in peace processes, peacebuilding and peacekeeping operations.

The NGO Working Group on Women, Peace and Security, a project of Tides Center, is a coalition of 14 international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working to advance the Women, Peace and Security agenda at the United Nations and around the world. We believe that sustainable peace can only be achieved if women’s human rights are promoted and respected and that women have meaningful participat

ion across all conflict prevention and resolution efforts, as well as in post conflict rebuilding activities. Our members work in over 50 countries that have been affected by conflict and partner with over 200 NGOs and 75 networks of civil society actors and activists. We are the only civil society of its kind working on the women, peace and security agenda in New York. Through targeted advocacy, monitoring and gender analysis, we hold the Security Council, UN leadership and Member States accountable for their obligations under Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) and subsequent resolutions which form the women, peace and security agenda. Since 2000 we have been working to bring the voices of women’s rights defenders and local peacebuilders into the New York peace and security discussions. We serve as a bridge between women’s human rights defenders and peacebuilders working in conflict-affected situations and senior policy-makers at UN Headquarters. On behalf of women, peace and security civil society we are formally and regularly invited to provide the UN Security Council with the civil society perspective on the women, peace and security agenda. We are publicly credited as increasing the Security Council’s engagement with civil society by advocating for entry to Council spaces.

Today, we were honored to support Noura Erakat, Palestinian-American human rights attorney and author, in briefing the UN Security Council at the Open Debate on Women, Peace and Security.

Nowhere is the promise of the WPS agenda more apparent than in Palestine, "where for decades, courageous Palestinian women have resisted dispossession, removal, apartheid, and now genocide." Her statement detailed how attacks on the reproductive capacity of Palestinian women and girls collectively aim to eliminate the possibility of a Palestinian future.

Noura’s message to the Secuirty Council was clear: the inalienable rights of Palestinian women and girls are non-negotiable, and any solution to end the genocide cannot come at the expense of accountability or respect for international law. Read her full statement here: wps.ngo/erakat

Today, we were honored to support Ikhlass Ahmed, Coordinator and Founder of Darfur Advocacy Group, in briefing the UN Security Council at the Open Debate on Conflict-Related Sexual Violence on the situation in Sudan.

In Sudan, CRSV has become a hallmark of the war, committed by all warring parties against women and girls, particularly in Darfur. Support for survivors is nowhere close to meeting the overwhelming needs. Without the UN or any mechanism for civilian protection, WHRDs, frontline workers and local volunteers are the only actors on the ground delivering life-saving support, despite dangerous conditions and limited resources.

Her message to the UNSC was clear: End impunity for violations of women’s rights in Sudan—and in all conflicts and crises. Read her full statement here: https://wps.ngo/ikhlass

At the UN Security Council today, Amina Khoulani recalls briefing the Council in 2019 under very different circumstances for Syria: "Six years ago, I sat in this very Council, facing representatives of the Assad regime — the same regime that arrested my brothers, Majd, Mohamad, and Abdulsattar, and executed them in detention centres, as it did with hundreds of thousands of Syrians."

Today, for the first time, she was “able to speak as a member of civil society without fear of arrest or torture in Syria.” Her return to the Council marks a historic moment for Syrian women civil society as they lead the charge for justice, peace, and inclusivity in the reconstruction of a new Syria.
