45 years ago, the first cases of what we'd come to know as AIDS were reported. The communities hit hardest built a movement and reshaped care.

In 2002, Elton John testified before the Senate HELP Committee to urge greater American leadership in the global fight against AIDS. The following year, PEPFAR was signed into law and became one of the most consequential global health programs in history.

Today, Elton and I have an op-ed in USA TODAY about why that leadership still matters.

PEPFAR has saved millions of lives and helped move the world closer to ending AIDS as a public health threat. But progress is not permanence. We have come too far to retreat now.

Since 2020, the Elton John AIDS Foundation has invested $23 million in LGBTQ+ funding, helping reach people too often overlooked by the world.
