This past September the Hispanic Scholars Program collaborated on the “Building Community; Bolstering Resistance” Symposium where we explored Puerto Rican history and faith communities alongside our collaborators Yale Divinity School, Andover Newton Seminary at Yale Divinity School, and Union Theological Seminary.

The symposium began with Rev. Dr. Yara González-Justiniano, Ph.D. (Vanderbilt Divinity School) preaching and presiding over the Chapel service followed by a panel featuring Dr. Efraín Agosto. The keynote lecture entitled “The Colonial Gospel in Puerto Rico: Protestant Missionaries and the Making of Empire” was delivered by Dr. Jorge Rodríguez, Ph.D. (Hispanic Scholars Program, Union Theological Seminary). Thank you to Rev. JaQuan Beachem (Yale Divinity School) for their facilitation throughout the symposium, Dr. Adrián Emmanuel Hernández-Acosta, Ph.D. (Yale Divinity School) for his moderation, and the respondents: Rev. Dr. Yara González-Justiniano, Ph.D. (Vanderbilt Divinity School), Aryana Alexis Anderson (Union Theological Seminary), and Rev. Antonio Vargas (Yale Divinity School).

We’re excited to share 3 new grant opportunities from the Lilly Endowment.

✔️Serving Neighbors Through Congregational Collaborations Initiative: Up to $5 million each to support programs that will help congregations identify pressing human and social needs in their communities, build relationships with community organizations working on these needs, and then design and launch collaborative endeavors to address these needs.
✔️National Initiative to Strengthen Chaplaincies at Colleges and Universities: Up to $2.5 million each to accredited, four-year colleges and universities in the United States to help them strengthen the work of chaplaincies or offices of religious life on their own campuses.
✔️National Initiative to Strengthen Christian Campus Ministries at Colleges and Universities: Up to $7.5 million each to national and regional denominational agencies, campus ministry parachurch organizations and collegiate ministries associations, among others, to strengthen local Christian campus ministries at or near public and private universities and colleges.

This season of To-Be-Read Fridays focuses on the amazing scholarship of our HSP faculty. Our recommendation this week is the article "The Neoliberal Co-Optation of Identity Politics: Geo-Political Situatedness as a Decolonial Discussion Partner" by our Executive Director, Dr. Jorge J Rodríguez, PhD, published in Decolonial Horizons.

Jorge Juan Rodríguez V grew up in an affordable housing community in Manchester, Connecticut as the son of two Puerto Rican migrants. He first joined the Hispanic Scholars Program in 2014 as a social media intern and rose through the organization to become Deputy Executive Director before assuming the role of Executive Director in 2026. During his tenure, he helped quadruple HSP’s annual operating budget, grow programming from two to fourteen annual offerings, and reshaped the organization’s governance. As principal grant writer, he has secured nearly $9 million in funding from organizations including the Lilly Endowment, the Forum for Theological Exploration, and the American Council of Learned Societies. A historian, educator, and public theologian, Dr. Rodríguez holds a B.A. from Gordon College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Modern Religious History from Union Theological Seminary, where he has served as Assistant Teaching Professor of Historical Studies since 2021. His scholarship explores race, religion, and social movements, and he is the series editor for Theological Education ¡Latinamente! (Fortress Press). In addition to his scholarly work, he is the founder of JJRodriguezV Consulting and serves on the Board of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.

🌎HSP Impact Stories: Larry Figueroa🌎⁠

Larry Figueroa is a pianist, accountant, and budding Biblical Scholar pursuing a Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible at Union Theological Seminary. A multi-time HSP Alum, Larry has participated in nearly half of the programs offered by the organization including the J-Term, Summer Session, Latinx Discernment Workshop, and Latinx Doctoral Accompaniment Seminar. He is a founding member of the HSP Alumni Network and its former President.

Our community of stakeholders includes alumni receiving transformative funding to create interreligious family ministries, students serving on the front lines of human rights advocacy, and faculty advancing decolonial and liberatory scholarship in dialogue with the Global South. Students gather from across the world to take courses offered by leading scholars in Latine/Hispanic studies and theological education. These are the courses we will be offering in 2027.
