What is it to be an American? What has it been from the start? What is it today? Just how noble are we How vulgar? How bigoted? How free?
All of these are the questions that Joe Sutton’s play EXCELSIOR explores, first through the unlikely romance of young, free-spirited 19th century English novelist, and the object of her desire – a charmingly awkward, if Harvard educated, New Englander. Then, in act two, through another surprising encounter — this one it’s best not to divulge.
In the end, the question that’s asked is age-old: Can love transcend identity and beliefs – or are we inescapably bound by prejudice?
Please make reservations to see the culmination of a weeklong workshop of this play. There will be a pair of readings on Saturday night, April 18th, at 7:30 pm, as well as a Sunday matinee, on April 19th, at 3. This reading is free of charge, but donations are welcome.
