is a day of remembrance and joy, but it's also a key moment to affirm the link between racial justice and maternal health.

As women around the U.S. lose access to respectful, life-saving maternity care and perinatal supports, disparities in outcomes are widening, with Black women disproportionately experiencing poor outcomes.

Black women are 3.5X more likely to die from pregnancy and childbirth complications than white women – and these outcomes cut across socioeconomic status.

To achieve a world where everyone has equitable access to quality, respectful maternity care, we must center racial justice in this work.

Behind every great athlete is a family that believed in them from the very beginning... often a mother who has been there every step of the way. Congratulations to Sandra Brunson as the Knicks celebrate this incredible moment. Her unwavering support for her family is a reminder of the vital role mothers play in helping their children pursue their dreams.

We were proud to honor Sandra as one of our Mothers of the Year at our 15th Anniversary Gala last year, where we recognized her leadership through the Second Round Foundation, which she co-founded with her son, Jalen Brunson, to expand opportunities for young people in education, sports, and community. The Foundation serves communities that are often overlooked—families navigating limited resources, systemic inequities, and daily challenges.

Today, we join all of NYC to celebrate a championship, a remarkable team, and a mother whose impact extends far beyond the game.

H.R. 1, also known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”, passed in July of 2025 and enacts the largest cuts to Medicaid in the program’s 60-year history. The bill introduces significant barriers to care for mothers and families and will contribute to the erosion of the maternal healthcare system. When formal systems for care become overburdened or fall short, community-based organizations (CBOs) act as an increasingly critical lifeline – often without commensurate increases in funding or support.

Grounded in perspectives from CBOs across the country, our new analysis of H.R. 1 is designed to help funders interpret, anticipate, and respond to the impacts of the bill, and understand how to support CBOs that are on the forefront of the care ecosystem.

In April, we took a group of journalists to Arkansas as part of the first ever U.S. Maternal Health Press Fellowship. Why Arkansas?

Arkansas has one of the highest rates of maternal mortality in the country. The state also has the fewest maternity care providers per 100,000 women of reproductive age of any state in the U.S.

However, it’s not all dire. There are key policy solutions that can tackle the forces leading to these outcomes – and momentum toward those solutions in the state of Arkansas is increasing.
