We have the power to reshape maternal health in this country.

Person-centered care isn’t just a goal, it is a proven model that can make pregnancy and birth experiences safer, more respectful, and more supported. Doulas play an important role in making that possible.

Continuous support from birth and postpartum doulas can help reduce complications and unnecessary interventions, while ensuring mothers and families feel informed, heard, and supported throughout their care.

When we invest in doula support, we're taking an important step towards ensuring every mom is part of a system where they are heard, advocated for, and safe.

It’s a fact: community-based care strengthens the whole system of maternal healthcare. 🤍

CBOs fill critical gaps where systems fail mothers, but they are often overburdened, under-resourced, and in urgent need of investment and support. Investing in local, community-based organizations means care is more accessible where families live, and moms can choose the care that works for them from providers they can trust.

We’re still flying high from Chicago Marathon Weekend!

Thank you to our incredible Team EMC Bank of America Chicago Marathon runners, who collectively raised over $125,000 to make the maternal health journey safe for everyone, everywhere.

We’re also grateful for 10+ years of partnership with Clare V. who hosted us in Chicago.

A big thank-you to Clare V. Chicago and Marfa Stance Wilmette for donating a percentage of local sales from the weekend! And to Liz Prior for hosting us at SPACE 519 Wilmette with support from Abby Dunn PR.

The celebration didn’t stop at the finish line! Runners and partners gathered at Theater on the Lake - Restaurant/Events/Theater for a screening and discussion of our HBO Max documentary, Perilous Passage: Birth in America.

Distance to care is one of the biggest barriers for women seeking maternal health care in the United States and globally. As more rural health units close due to Medicaid cuts, pregnant people are forced to seek care farther from their homes, which often leads to worse outcomes.

Read this article by our fellow, Hanna Merzbach, for to learn more about how changes to Medicaid funding are affecting pregnant people in the United States, and how mothers and families in Mountain West states in particular could see some of the greatest impacts.

This Indigenous Peoples' Day we’re reminded that some of the most effective solutions have existed within communities for generations. 🤍

For over a decade, Lína Garcia, a Chicana and Kaxkan Indigenous midwife, has worked to ensure Indigenous and Latino communities have the maternal health care they need. Now, she’s bringing that mission to the Yakima Valley.

By launching a new Indigenous doula (“Nanas”) training program at Ttáwaxt Birth Justice Center, an EMC grantee partner, birth workers will be equipped and supported to preserve cultural traditions while expanding access to the dignified, respectful maternal healthcare that every family deserves.

“The community itself saves itself,” says Garcia.

What does better maternity care look like?

Midwifery-led care is one of the evidence-based approaches we know can improve maternal health outcomes and experiences. It is care rooted in trust, respect, and the needs of mothers and families.

But too many families don't have access to it.

In Perilous Passage: Birth in America, Nikia Grayson of CHOICES Memphis reflects on the legacy of Black midwives as healers and caregivers in their communities, and what it means to carry that legacy forward through her own work as a midwife today.

This National Midwifery Week, we celebrate midwives and the essential care they provide.

Last week, Every Mother Counts’ Board and Founder & President traveled to Arkansas for our Q3 board meeting – and to understand firsthand how communities are investing in mothers’ and families’ futures.

At Ignitecaps, we visited the Ignite High School Doula & Community Health Worker Program, a first-of-its-kind career studies initiative in Arkansas that trains high school seniors to become certified birth doulas and community health workers.

In a state where maternal mortality remains too high, programs like Ignite are helping to build the future maternal health workforce their communities need.

We also toured the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art Women in the Arts gallery, celebrating pioneering figures and contemporary voices shaping American art today.

And at the Heartland Forward Summit, we joined leaders thinking about what it takes for communities across the region to thrive. While there, Healthy Moms Healthy Babies America announced a historic investment of $10 million each in Arkansas and Kentucky over the next five years to expand maternal care in rural communities.

Better maternity care is possible if we invest in the people, programs, and systems that make safe, equitable, and respectful care available to every mother and family – in Arkansas and across the country.

The United States spends more on healthcare than any other high-resource country, yet has the highest maternal mortality rate among them.

But survival is just the baseline. Mothers and families deserve care that protects their health, dignity, and physical and emotional wellbeing throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period – not just care that gets them by.
