In April, we took a group of journalists to Arkansas as part of the first ever U.S. Maternal Health Press Fellowship. Why Arkansas?

Arkansas has one of the highest rates of maternal mortality in the country. The state also has the fewest maternity care providers per 100,000 women of reproductive age of any state in the U.S.

However, it’s not all dire. There are key policy solutions that can tackle the forces leading to these outcomes – and momentum toward those solutions in the state of Arkansas is increasing.

Learn more about maternal health issues and solutions in the state in our Maternal Health in Arkansas brief, which was recently developed to support our Maternal Health Press Fellows’ recent trip to the state: https://bit.ly/4nSewJB

In April, we kicked off our press fellowship with a visit to Arkansas, exploring what shapes maternal health across the state, and the progress underway following last year’s Healthy Mom, Healthy Babies legislation.

Throughout our visit, our fellows heard from providers, community health workers, legislators, advocates, and storytellers about the access gaps, systemic barriers, and workforce shortages shaping maternal health, and the collaborative, solutions-driven efforts working to change that. In Monticello & El Dorado - in rural south Arkansas - those conversations continued with a focus on rural care, where distance, infrastructure, and resources are exacerbating challenges.

At the UAMS - University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, our fellows experienced a pregnancy simulation, visited the antepartum unit, toured the hospital’s milk bank, and visited the Women’s Center, which offered a closer look at how care is delivered and supported.

We look forward to the upcoming visit to Minnesota to learn more about the the state’s maternal health ecosystem.

Every mother wants good lives for themselves and for their families. And, at the very minimum, that starts with surviving pregnancy and childbirth.

Through Mother’s Day this Sunday, May 10, the ShineMaker Foundation and an anonymous donor are matching every donation, up to $100,000, doubling your impact for mothers everywhere.

Every mother should be able to experience pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period safely, with dignity and respect. That should be the norm. That is what we’re working toward.
