In April, we kicked off our press fellowship with a visit to Arkansas, exploring what shapes maternal health across the state, and the progress underway following last year’s Healthy Mom, Healthy Babies legislation.
Throughout our visit, our fellows heard from providers, community health workers, legislators, advocates, and storytellers about the access gaps, systemic barriers, and workforce shortages shaping maternal health, and the collaborative, solutions-driven efforts working to change that. In Monticello & El Dorado - in rural south Arkansas - those conversations continued with a focus on rural care, where distance, infrastructure, and resources are exacerbating challenges.
At the UAMS - University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, our fellows experienced a pregnancy simulation, visited the antepartum unit, toured the hospital’s milk bank, and visited the Women’s Center, which offered a closer look at how care is delivered and supported.
We look forward to the upcoming visit to Minnesota to learn more about the the state’s maternal health ecosystem.
