H.R. 1 will put additional stress on the U.S. maternal health system, with Black women likely to be disproportionately affected.

The so-called “Big Beautiful Bill,” passed in July 2025, includes Medicaid changes and budget caps that will further strain the maternity care workforce and make it harder for families to access coverage and care. These impacts will be felt most by communities already facing barriers to maternal healthcare, as access to quality, culturally-rooted, and community-based care is threatened.

Nearly 100 labor and delivery units have closed across the U.S. in just two years.

And in more than half of the impacted counties, the unit that shuttered was the only birthing facility in the area.

The latest March of Dimes report paints a stark picture: Almost 6 million women of reproductive age live in counties with no or limited access to maternal healthcare.

Shortages of health providers, hospitals, and birth centers mean that some people – especially in rural areas – have to travel an hour or more to get basic prenatal and delivery care.

At Every Mother Counts, we are committed to ensuring everyone can access safe, respectful, and equitable care – no matter where they live.

A new AP report finds that the decision to dissolve USAID has decimated nutrition programs for millions of pregnant women and children and left birthing centers without medicine and staff.

In Nepal, the cuts closed a program that equipped birthing centers and trained nurses, midwives, and outreach workers.

Cuts to nutrition and reproductive outreach programs have already increased pregnancy complications and deaths.

Every Mother Counts has supported mothers and babies in Nepal through our grantee partner One Heart Worldwide since 2015, but without essential foreign aid, the progress we've made is at risk of unraveling.

For generations, Indigenous midwives have cared for their communities through models rooted in culture, trust, and tradition. Yet Indigenous communities continue to experience some of the world's greatest maternal health inequities.

This year, the United Nations is shining a spotlight on the critical role of Indigenous midwives on International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, through the day’s theme, “Honoring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being”.

Today, and every day, Every Mother Counts is committed to investing in Indigenous care providers by supporting their leadership, education, and work to advance culturally congruent, community-driven models of care.

Happy National Breastfeeding Month! 🧡

Did you know that doulas offer support to moms that can range from prenatal care to the laboring process to postpartum care, including breastfeeding? Compassionate care that extends beyond birth is essential for helping moms.

This moment between Doula Sharon and a new mother is a great example of how breastfeeding support is a critical component of quality maternity care.

In July, our press fellows traveled to Minnesota for the final leg of the Every Mother Counts U.S. Maternal Health Press Fellowship, to better understand the opportunities, challenges, and contradictions that define maternal health in the state. While Minnesota is a national leader in maternal and infant health and community-led solutions are improving outcomes, significant disparities persist, particularly for Black, American Indian, and immigrant and refugee communities.

Throughout the visit, fellows heard from leaders across the maternal health ecosystem about how policy, community-driven care, and cross-sector collaboration are improving maternal health outcomes while the state continues to address inequities. At EMC grantee partner Roots Community Birth Center, fellows toured the beautiful new space, learned about its model of inclusive, person-centered care, and heard from families about the positive impact on their birth experiences. Indigenous leaders offered a vision for maternal health grounded in community, culture, and traditional knowledge. Fellows also learned how changing reproductive health policies are reshaping maternity care, and how providers and advocates are responding with creativity and nimbleness as funding shifts, immigration enforcement, and increasing threats place new pressures on their communities. These conversations were just a few of the experiences that deepened fellows' understanding of the people, partnerships, and solutions shaping maternal health across Minnesota.

Thank you to every speaker, partner, and organization who shared their expertise, welcomed us into their communities, and made this experience possible.
