From the Page Act of 1875 to the murders of Christina Yuna Lee and Michelle Go, sexual and gender-based violence has long been used to target and dehumanize Asian women.

This trauma doesn’t just disappear. Studies show it can be passed down through generations...shaping how we move, survive, and exist in the world today. But just as trauma can be passed down generations, so can healing. We can take tangible steps to support and break cycles of sexual violence.

I am not soft, I am not sweet, and I do not want any more tourists in Hawaii.”
Haunani Kay-Trask was a scholar, poet and champion of sovereignty for the Hawaiian people who decried what she called the colonization and despoliation of her native land. In 1993, she helped lead a march of Native Hawaiians, known as Kanaka Maoli, who were seeking to reclaim lands held in trust by the state. The march, one of the first major protests calling for a return of native lands in Hawaii, took place on the centennial of the overthrow of its last queen, Liliuokalani.
“I am so proud to be angry. I am so proud to be a Hawaiian.”

The Model Minority Myth elevates the status of AAPI Individuals, diminishing their experiences with racism, and driving a wedge between the AAPI community and other communities of color.

It turns Asian Americans into a monolith of politeness and educational success, denying the diversity of the Asian American diaspora and coinciding with the perpetual foreigner stereotype to further prevent AAPI populations in being worthy of promotions or higher management positions in the workforce.

Gender and race are at the core of the work that we do. It's important to acknowledge and critically examine the harmful patterns and systemic issues that perpetuate discrimination and enable violence against our community.

It is equally essential to continuously remind ourselves and each other of our inherent worth and dignity. Despite the often challenging narratives and negative stereotypes that the world might impose upon us, and regardless of the dismissive or prejudiced messages we might receive, we must affirm that we belong in every space we choose to inhabit and that our contributions are invaluable. Our identities and experiences enrich the world, and they are not only valid but are also powerful and necessary.

This , Rise aims to shed light on some important & harmful stereotypes in the AAPI community.

Yellow Fever isn't a compliment and it isn't the same as "having a type." This phenomenon, spanning decades, has contributed to the exoticization, objectification, fe**shization, and dehumanization of the AAPI community - especially Asian women.

It is a practice that began gaining popularity during American military presence in East and Southeast Asia, and it still pervades elements of our society today. Yellow Fever feeds into a culture of abuse against Asian women, relying on and perpetuating dangerous power dynamics of submission and control, stripping women of their identity and reducing them to merely their background.

Asian women are not your fantasy or your fe**sh. They deserve to be viewed as humans with individual flaws, desires, triumphs, disappointments, and quirks. Let's support them today and everyday.
