A documentary can show us what happened.
A fictional film can ask us to imagine what it felt like.

Both can tell a powerful social story. But they do it differently.

Documentary often works through proximity to reality: real people, real places, real events and real voices.
Fiction has another tool: imagination.
It can place us inside a character's experience, recreate a reality, or explore a situation that never happened exactly as shown, but still reveals something true about the world.

Neither approach is automatically more powerful.

A documentary about displacement and a fictional story about one displaced family might leave an audience with completely different impressions.
One can make us understand the facts.
The other can make us feel the human experience behind them.
And sometimes, the line between the two becomes beautifully blurred.
That's what makes socially relevant cinema so interesting. It isn't defined by one format, one genre or one way of telling a story.

At SRFF, we welcome different approaches to exploring the world we live in.
Because there is more than one way to tell the truth.

So, what happens to the films already submitted?
The selection process begins with watching.
Our team reviews the films submitted to the festival, looking at the story, the filmmaking, the perspective and the experience each film creates for its audience.
From there, the work becomes increasingly about curation: considering how different films speak to one another and how they can come together to create a thoughtful and diverse festival programme.
And while our team begins this process, new submissions are still coming in.

When a Local Story Becomes Universal
The most powerful films don't begin by trying to speak to everyone.
They begin by speaking truthfully to someone.

A family in a remote village. A young woman fighting for her future. A neighborhood struggling to preserve its identity. A community facing injustice. These stories are deeply rooted in a specific place, culture, or lived experience.
