A documentary can show us what happened.
A fictional film can ask us to imagine what it felt like.

Both can tell a powerful social story. But they do it differently.

Documentary often works through proximity to reality: real people, real places, real events and real voices.
Fiction has another tool: imagination.
It can place us inside a character's experience, recreate a reality, or explore a situation that never happened exactly as shown, but still reveals something true about the world.

Neither approach is automatically more powerful.

A documentary about displacement and a fictional story about one displaced family might leave an audience with completely different impressions.
One can make us understand the facts.
The other can make us feel the human experience behind them.
And sometimes, the line between the two becomes beautifully blurred.
That's what makes socially relevant cinema so interesting. It isn't defined by one format, one genre or one way of telling a story.

At SRFF, we welcome different approaches to exploring the world we live in.
Because there is more than one way to tell the truth.

The next opportunity is the Late Deadline: October 10, 2026.

So, what happens to the films already submitted?
The selection process begins with watching.
Our team reviews the films submitted to the festival, looking at the story, the filmmaking, the perspective and the experience each film creates for its audience.
From there, the work becomes increasingly about curation: considering how different films speak to one another and how they can come together to create a thoughtful and diverse festival programme.
And while our team begins this process, new submissions are still coming in.

When a Local Story Becomes Universal
The most powerful films don't begin by trying to speak to everyone.
They begin by speaking truthfully to someone.

A family in a remote village. A young woman fighting for her future. A neighborhood struggling to preserve its identity. A community facing injustice. These stories are deeply rooted in a specific place, culture, or lived experience.

Yet, when told with honesty and authenticity, they transcend geography. They become mirrors in which audiences around the world recognize love, loss, hope, resilience, courage, and the shared pursuit of dignity and equality.

Parasite is rooted in the realities of South Korea. Roma unfolds in the streets of Mexico City. Minari follows a Korean American family pursuing the American dream in rural Arkansas. The Story of Souleymane (L'Histoire de Souleymane)immerses us in the daily life of a Guinean bicycle courier navigating the streets of Paris.

Each story is unmistakably local. Yet each resonated with audiences around the world because they speak to something fundamentally human: our search for belonging, equality, hope, and connection.

At the Socially Relevant Film Festival New York, we celebrate filmmakers who embrace the uniqueness of their communities rather than dilute it. Because cinema doesn't become universal by erasing difference, it becomes universal by revealing the humanity within them.
