We love our sister in Idaho. I had the privilege of attending one of their Annual Council Meetings and got to know their fun group! DBE Idaho - a British and Commonwealth of Nations Women’s Organization Three Cheers!

Meet your past State Board President, Cathy Rushton. Did you know Cathy has been with DBE since the beginning and has held many positions within the DBE over the years? President (2022 - 2025), Vice President (2020 - 2022), Recording Secretary (2008-2009), 1st Vice President (2003-2007). Cathy joined the DBE through Joyce Hickey (DBE Idaho’s first president). Originally, she had wanted to immerse herself in US life and didn’t want to spend time with other Brits, but after a year she found herself back with the Brits. Her new goal, now that she’s taken a step back from the State Board, is to see the wonderful things that the new board will bring to DBE. (Although it’s hard to keep Cathy from being involved, she is now on the National Historian Committee.)
When asked for a funny story she shared this: living in a new country is very different from visiting - just going round the grocery store took ages the first few times, as many of the brands were different - there were some words I didn't understand (what is the GOP?), or which had different meanings (green onions versus spring onions) and sometimes I just didn't know where to buy something and had to ask someone. We moved to a rented house, which had a mailbox out on the street; this was the first time I'd had such a thing. I asked my friend Laura, who had been my go-to regarding cultural questions, what the little flag was for - I thought maybe the mail carrier put it up to signify that you had mail, so you knew to go out and get it. Laura told me that on your birthday, if you put the flag up, the carrier will leave you a little gift!
Did you know she was also reported in the newspaper in 2004 for her sponge recipe?
