NYC Sabres, Inc: Sabres & Falcons Basketball

NYC Sabres, Inc: Sabres & Falcons Basketball The NYC Sabres was founded in 1998 by Thomas Law along with five ambitious young girls from the New York Chinatown Community.

A New York City based not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation promoting the development of Asian American youth and young adults through the sport of basketball and community service. Tom started this program with the goal of encouraging girls to learn and play competitive basketball. After five years of hard work and hundreds of hours of practicing, the team began winning and attracting new members.

With the help of his wife, Patty Ma, the team officially formed a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation in July of 2003. Since then, membership has vastly grown with over 40 active members ranging from the ages of 9 to 30 years old. Patty has solidified her role as the Team Administrator and the "Mom". The development of this team would not have been possible without the presence of two coaches, Pierre Nguyen and Wilson Lew. We now have a group of parents and players who volunteer their time and expertise to enhance our efforts. Throughout these past years of amazing growth, the team has remained true to its values: team commitment, solid academics, and community service. We are not sure whether any of our girls will someday play in the WNBA, but we are certain that they will become model citizens and make our community better.

In 2013, Safyre Terry lost her father and siblings in a suspected arson fire. She was the sole survivor and had suffered burns over 75% of her body, causing her to lose her left foot and right hand. Despite her tragic story she remains to be such a brave and positive soul. Christmas is Safyre's favorite holiday and her wish is to fill up a card tree purchased by her paternal aunt. See article for more info.

A kind gesture can reach a wound only compassion can heal. If you would like to send Safyre a Christmas card, please mail it to:

Safyre Terry was the only member of her family to survive an apartment fire. This Christmas, the 8-year-old has one wish: Christmas cards.
