The Center for Architecture is the premier cultural venue for architecture and the built environment in New York City, informed by the complexity of the City’s urban fabric and in dialogue with the global community. The Center shares a home with the American Institute of Architecture New York (AIANY) chapter and has the unique advantage of drawing upon the ideas and experiences of practicing archi

tects to produce thought-provoking exhibitions, informative public programs, and quality design education experiences for K-12 students. It also leads New York City’s annual month-long architecture and design festival, . The Center for Architecture’s aim is to further public knowledge about New York City architecture and architects, foster exchange and collaboration among members of the design, development, building, scholarly, and policy sectors, and inspire new ideas about the role of design in communities by presenting contemporary and practical issues in architecture and urbanism to a general audience.

🖼️ Exhibition co-curator Barry Bergdoll discuss our current exhibition “Gerrit Rietveld: Wealth of Sobriety” and the emergence of Rietveld’s design language with his Schröder House and Red Blue Chair. Now on view through September 2 at the Center for Architecture, “Wealth of Sobriety” showcases the photography of Arjan Bronkhorst and juxtaposes details from 15 of Rietveld’s groundbreaking houses, inviting visitors to experience their salient aesthetic attributes and patterns. The exhibitions’s Crate Lounge Chairs have been generously provided by . Initially designed to make use of surplus wooden shipping crates by Dutch architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld in 1934, the Crate Collection has been relaunched in a Rietveld Originals x HAY collaboration.

"Energies of Repair: Visualizing Community Power in NYC" is co-curated by Andrea Johnson and Ashley Dawson. Here, Johnson discusses how she and Dawson came together to realize the exhibition as part of this year’s Center for Architecture Lab. Responding to the prompt of “Repair – Democracy and Urban Spaces,” Johnson and Dawson looked to local grassroots organizations actively doing the work to move New York City towards a just energy transition.

The exhibition is on view until September 2, 2026, at the Center for Architecture.

🏅This year AIA New York bestowed its New Perspectives Award on , which bridges gaps between people, place and power to realize racial justice in Black communities. Founded on principles of Black liberation in Brooklyn in 2015, BlackSpace Urbanist Collective began as a group of urbanists dissatisfied with the lack of imagination in shaping neighborhoods to center justice and joy. Today, BlackSpace facilitates opportunities for urbanists and creatives to co-create social and spatial change.

Here, co-founder and executive director Emma Osore accepts the award at the AIANY Honors and Awards Luncheon last month. Congratulations again to BlackSpace!

🏅 We’re excited to share the honoree speech from Sharon Prince, CEO and Founder of , who accepted the AIANY Champion of Architecture Award at our Honors and Awards Luncheon last month. Congratulations again to Prince, who has been instrumental in recognizing exploitation in the global building materials supply chain. Prince mobilized industry leaders and launched the Design for Freedom movement in 2020 with a groundbreaking report. 

Today, Prince is the Co-Founder of Grace Farms Tea & Coffee, a certified B Corp that demonstrates ethical and sustainable supply chains and offered nationally at JPMorgan to Whole Foods. 100% of profits supports Design for Freedom.

Part 4 | There’s one week left to visit Making Energy Visible at the Center for Architecture before the exhibition closes on March 28! Here, curator Tülay Atak introduces the work “Earth Current” by Michael Wang, one of the contemporary works on view as part the show’s exploration into the many ways humanity reveals—and conceals—energy infrastructure.

Gathering interpretations, representations, and visualizations of energy in architecture, the exhibition unfolds in six parts—Bodies at Work, Sources of Energy, Conserving Energy, Systems of Conversion, Distribution of Power, and Consumption to Expenditure—each presented through a timeline of architectural, infrastructural, and environmental projects.
