We affirm this statement from LCWR.

On this day of remembrance, LCWR renews our commitment to dismantle systemic racism in all its manifestations

…“the memory of past complicity and blindness in the face of the injustice of slavery becomes a call to vigilance. What we have learned must be translated into discernment and responsibility in the present.” — Pope Leo XIV, Magnifica Humanitas, no. 177.

“Juneteenth is a significant date in American history and the African American experience. The name is a play on the date of June 19th, 1865. On that day, the Union Army made its way into Galveston, TX under the leadership of General Gordon Granger, and he announced to the people of Texas that all enslaved African Americans were free.

Even though we know that the Emancipation Proclamation freed African Americans in rebelling states (Texas being one of them, from as early as it when the Proclamation went into effect on January 1st, 1863) and we know that the Civil War had ended in April of 1865, it took a while for freedom to make its way to the western most rebelling state. Although there were enslavers who were aware of the implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation, it wasn’t until June 19th, 1865, that it was actually enforced with the Union Army. June 19th freed enslaved people in the rebelling states, it did not free enslaved people throughout the nation.” Mary Elliott, Curator of American Slavery

It was a true blessing and a great joy to see you all on Saturday at the celebration of the Little Sisters’ 135th anniversary. Each of you brought your own unique presence, adding to what was a truly memorable and grace-filled day.

Thank you for the love you continue to show the Sisters. Your affection was felt in every conversation, every smile, and every moment shared during the celebration. We are deeply grateful for your companionship on this extraordinary mission journey of 135 years, rooted in love, compassion, empathy, service, and hope.

We also held close in our hearts those who could not join us in person. Your messages, prayers, and heartfelt wishes were with us throughout the celebration, reminding us that distance cannot diminish the bonds that unite us.

As we reflect on these 135 years of faithful ministry, we remember that the Mission is not just a story of the past; it remains alive and continues through each one of us. May we carry forward its spirit with renewed commitment, empathy, and love.

Together, we will honor the six courageous missionary sisters who arrived in New York in 1891, the generations of Little Sisters who faithfully carried their mission forward, and the six Little Sisters who continue this beautiful work today.

Happy Feast of the Holy Trinity!

"When God laughs at the soul and the soul laughs back at God, the persons of the Trinity are begotten.

When the Father laughs at the son and the son laughs back at the Father, that laughter gives pleasure, that pleasure gives joy, that joy gives love, and that love is the Holy Spirit."
- Meister Eckhart
