May 7, 2019 at 7pm Resistance Cinema Presents: Digital Disconnect: How Capitalism is Turning the Internet Against Democracy
Join us in the Parish Hall (12 West 11th Street) next Tuesday. In this era of data privacy breaches, "fake news" and filter bubbles, this essential film turns the focus toward the relationship between the internet and democracy. Tracing the internet's history as a publicly funded project in the 1960s to its full-scale commercialization today, the film reveals how the democratizing potential of the internet has been radically compromised by the surreptitious collection of personal data and its sale to advertisers for financial and political gain. And while related debates tend to focus on the personal impact of the ethically questionable data-mining practices of a few isolated companies, Digital Disconnect shows how the engine driving these practices isn’t just about greed – it’s actually threatening democracy. The screening is free of charge - donations gratefully received. Join us for this exciting and informative film. Bring a friend!

Ascension Outreach Presents Symbiotic Earth: a film and discussion on Saturday, March 16, 2019 from 2-6 p.m. Symbiotic Earth explores the life and ideas of scientific rebel Lynn Margulis who challenged entrenched theories of male-dominated science. Through numerous collaborations she caused a seismic shift in our understanding of life. Margulis’ symbiotic narrative presents an alternative to the destructive worldview that has led to climate change and extreme capitalism. With James Lovelock she developed the Gaia Theory that all life is interconnected and interdependent. Her vision offers bold insights into health, society, and nature, and inspires creative approaches to our pressing environmental and social crises. The film and discussion will take place in the Church with Earth Ethics & Climate Crisis Panel & Discussion. The panelists will be Fritjof Capra (scientist & activist), John Feldman (NYU Professor of Biology and Environmental Sciences), Tyler Volk (filmmaker), and others. Nancy Rhodes of Encompass New Opera Theater will be the moderator.

Resistance Cinema Movie Night, Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at 7pm. Ascension Outreach & Resistance Cinema present Long Way From Home in the Parish Hall of The Church of the Ascension, 12 West 11th Street, NYC. This film focuses on the inner lives of three remarkable young women who move between two very different worlds – life at home and life at school in New York City. The documentary filmmaker Kavery Kaul will be with us to guide our post-screening discussion. Her documentary Long Way from Home has been described as “a complex web that asks America very basic questions about religion, diversity, tolerance, and how serious we are about any of them.” Please join us for a film that is both powerful and deeply sensitive followed by an informal discussion. This will be our holiday event, so bring your friends and some snacks or finger food to share if you can!

Feb. 6, 2018 at 7pm: Ascension Outreach and Resistance Cinema continue our monthly film series with The Great White Hoax in the Parish House of The Church of the Ascension, 12 West 11th Street. The film features acclaimed anti-racist educator and author Tim Wise who explores how American political leaders of both parties have been tapping into white anxiety, stoking white grievance, and scapegoating people of color for decades to divide and conquer working class voters and shore up political support. Special guest speakers TBA; free of charge – donations gratefully accepted. We hope you can join us!
