Enjoy the dulcet voice of Sarah “Songbird” Burkey as she sings traditional and contemporary Appalachian songs of life, love, and loss. Much like the landscape in which it thrives, Appalachian music is beautiful, strong, and at times challenging. Sarah “Songbird” Burkey sings of life and death, everyday events and wild imagination, joy and pain in this two hour concert celebrating the unique culture, stories, and singing style of Appalachia. Raised in rural Kentucky, Sarah’s songwriting and incomparable vocals feature in numerous films and albums and earned her international acclaim as an authentic voice for Roots Music.

Non-amplified, acoustic instrumental accompaniment may be used with songs. All levels of singing expertise, from amateurs to accomplished, are welcome as well as those who just want to listen. Old Songs Festival (just "Old Songs" to its friends) is a family-friendly festival of folk, traditional, Celtic and world music and dance, known for its relaxed atmosphere, interactive sessions and workshops, hands-on experience and participatory nature. In addition to evening concerts each night, there are over 100 daytime workshops, dances or performances. Also featured are craft, food and instrument vendors, and a well-run children’s activity area. Bring the kids! Bring your instruments!

Join us Saturday, May 30 at 12:30 pm to learn how to find and leverage your true voice from gifted singer and storyteller Sarah "Songbird" Burkey.

Sarah Elizabeth Burkey was raised in and influenced by Appalachian, Indigenous, and Black cultures and eventually became a mentee of Jean Ritchie. She sings with power, clarity, and a voice with something to say, drawing in all who listen. She will use her approach to vocal technique and storytelling to nurture your true voice wherever you are in your singing journey. Everyone from curious beginners to seasoned performers can benefit from this incomparable vocal artist.
