America SCORES partners with urban schools to provide a high quality, team-based program that integrates soccer, poetry and service-learning. Our innovative approach improves students’ health, academic achievement and civic engagement. America SCORES is the only urban youth development program with curriculum specifically aligned with the twelve Standards for English Language Arts (National Counci
l of Teachers of English), the six National Standards for Physical Education (National Association for Sport and Physical Education), and the eight K-12 Service-Learning Standards (National Youth Leadership Council). Who we serve:
• 13,000 + youth, 100% of participants are at-risk, urban public school students
• over 800 public school teachers in nearly 300 urban elementary and middle schools
• 11 affiliate cities: Bay Area, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, New York, Seattle, St. Of the students we serve 47% are Hispanic, 29% are African-American, 6% are Caucasian, 6% are bi/multiracial, 6% are Asian-American/Pacific Islander, and 6% identify as “other” and 50% of participants are girls who have traditionally been excluded from sports activities
Today, America SCORES students:
• write more than 20,000 original literary works each year
• get 10 times more exercise than the national average
• provide 200,000 hours of volunteer work to their communities
• publish their work in magazines
• participate in spoken word events in front of audiences of hundreds
