From October 5-8th, Nancy and Stephen Grand International Institute for Counter-Terrorism - ICT held the annual Shabtai Shavit World Summit on Counter-Terrorism on campus, under the theme: “The Evolving Architecture of Terror: States, Proxies and Technology.”

The conference served as a platform for international dialogue, the exchange of knowledge and experience, and an examination of the evolving challenges that terrorism poses to Israel and the world. On October 7, a moving and deeply painful memorial ceremony was held to mark the third anniversary of the October 7 massacre and to honor those who fell and were murdered.

Over four days, hundreds of policymakers, security officials, researchers, academics, and experts from Israel and around the world gathered for in-depth professional discussions on terrorism and the security challenges facing Israel and the international community.

This year’s conference also marked the 30th anniversary of ICT, which has become a global center for the study and understanding of terrorism and strategies to combat it.

Prof. Boaz Ganor, President of Reichman University and Founding Executive Director of the ICT, addressed the importance of holding the conference at this particular moment:

“Your decision to come to Israel this year cannot be taken for granted. You are joining us at an extraordinary and complex time, as a long and difficult war draws to a close, while Israel and the entire region continue to grapple with the consequences of historic and traumatic events. It is precisely for this reason that your choice to come here, participate in discussions, share knowledge and experience, and, above all, engage in a shared professional dialogue on one of the greatest challenges of our time—counter-terrorism—is especially meaningful.”

At the opening of the conference, Prof. Uriel Reichman, Founding President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Reichman University, said:

“The images from October 7 have stayed with us ever since. Each of us has a personal story of loss. And despite everything we have endured, our love for our country and our commitment to Israeli society continue to grow. We established a Zionist university here—a university that speaks of freedom and responsibility, and that places above all else the education of people to think creatively and live in a free-market economy, while embracing a sense of national responsibility that includes the willingness to physically defend the existence of the State of Israel and fight for the fundamental values upon which it was founded.”

Three years have passed since October 7, and the pain is still present.

On the National Day of Remembrance for the events of October 7, the Reichman University community honors the memory of those who were murdered and those who fell, and pays tribute to the IDF soldiers, security personnel, and emergency responders who acted, and continue to act, with dedication and courage to protect the State of Israel.

For us, remembrance is also personal. We remember the members of our university community whom we have lost:

From the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism - ICT and the Institute for Policy and Strategy - IPS to The Argov Fellows Program in Leadership and Diplomacy and The Public Diplomacy Program, students and faculty are developing the knowledge, leadership skills, and global perspectives needed to make an impact.

My name is Talia Raab. I’m 22 years old and an undergraduate Communication student at Reichman University - International School. I’m originally from Chicago, Illinois. I made Aliyah three years ago, and today I live in Tel Aviv. I grew up in an area with a very small Jewish community, and I was one of the only Jewish students at my school. I experienced antisemitism as a child, but I was also raised with pride in my identity and a deep connection to Israel. As the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, the significance of having a Jewish state has been part of my life from an early age. My brother made Aliyah first and served as a lone soldier, followed by my older sister and then me. Today, our entire family is here.
Before moving to Israel, I spent two years at a university in the United States, where I founded and led a Students Supporting Israel chapter on the campus. I was involved in advocacy, combating antisemitism, and giving Jewish students and supporters of Israel a voice. I was proud of the work I was doing, but I also wanted to learn, grow, and build a future without constantly feeling that I had to explain or defend my identity. After October 7, I knew I needed to come home. I didn’t want to continue fighting for my home from thousands of miles away. I wanted to be there.
I chose Reichman University because I wanted to connect my studies with the work I was already doing and understand how narratives are created, how public opinion is shaped, and how communication changes the way a country or a people is perceived. Alongside my degree, I am part of The Public Diplomacy Program. Last year, I was part of the marketing and social media team at the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism - ICT, as part of the Shabtai Shavit World Summit on Counter-Terrorism.
During my studies, I founded OlimPact, an app designed to help new immigrants integrate into Israeli society by connecting them with jobs, services, businesses, and community. I also created The Jewish Seed, a short film made with artificial intelligence and based on my grandmother’s story of survival during the Holocaust. My goal was to preserve her testimony and pass it on to the next generation. In both projects, I applied what I learned in the classroom to issues that are deeply meaningful to me.
Living here during wartime has taught me how much strength there is in the ability to keep living, studying, and planning for the future amid uncertainty. There are moments when I am afraid, but fear and the desire to leave are two different things. Israel is my home, even when reality is difficult, and this period has only strengthened my decision to build my life here.
My message to fellow students: Don’t treat your degree as something you simply need to finish. Enjoy the journey, seek out your professors and the people around you for support, and apply what you learn to projects that matter to you. And to the students who are serving while studying: You are heroes. Alongside your service and sacrifice, you come to class, take exams, and build your future here. You are protecting Israel today and building Israel’s tomorrow.
