Most people see bullets as a symbol of war.
Juan Carlos Pallarols sees them as a chance to create something different.
For over 40 years, he has collected bullets, shell casings, and other paraphernalia left behind by war. He melts them down and turns them into handcrafted roses.
Sometimes, the strongest message isn’t made with weapons.
It’s made by transforming them into something that brings people together.

Every day, Yukio Shige goes to the same cliffs in Japan.
Not to enjoy the view.
He goes because someone there might be feeling alone.
Instead of walking past, he stops. He talks. He listens. Sometimes, he shares a cup of tea or gives someone a safe place to stay.
Over the years, he and his team have helped more than 800 people choose a different path.
You never know what someone else is going through.
Sometimes, a kind conversation can be the reason someone keeps going.

People are not born hating one another. They learn it. That also means they can learn empathy, respect, and friendship.
Hand in Hand shows what is possible when children grow up knowing one another instead of fearing one another. Jewish and Arab students learn side by side, celebrating one another’s cultures while discovering the humanity they share.
As Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel wrote, “The only way to love God is to love Him through mankind.”
May the next generation learn to recognize that shared humanity and build a future together.

The Universal Academy of Cultures was founded in 1992. Elie Wiesel served as the founding president. Members formed a society dedicated to thinking through the world’s future in ethical terms and proposing ways to fight intolerance, xenophobia, racism, antisemitism, and discrimination against women. Among its roughly 70 members were figures like Maurice Béjart, Umberto Eco, Octavio Paz, Yehudi Menuhin, Paul Ricoeur, and Mario Vargas Llosa.

On June 24, the 2026 Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics winners kicked off their fellowship with their first seminar diving into the life and legacy of Professor Elie Wiesel.

This year’s winners joined Dr. Avraham Rosen, who studied with Elie Wiesel and worked alongside him for decades, for a discussion of Wiesel’s life and work as an author and teacher. They also considered his life in relation to their own experiences and the ethical questions they hope to examine.

Additional seminars will take place this summer before the cohort meets in person on October 6, 2026, for a session on ethics and technology and the annual Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics Dinner at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City.

In 1986, Elie Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Ten years later, José Ramos-Horta won the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo. In his 1996 acceptance speech, he warned against “The cynicism and indifference of too many, betrayed by some…” and indeed, José spend decades battling indiffierence, to avocate for East Timor’s independence. His refusal to give up hope paid off, as today he is the nation’s president, paving a more peaceful future for the citizens of East Timor.
