👀 What makes a financial product safe?

Our 2025 Annual Report, Building a Better Financial Product Marketplace, answers this question—because not all financial products are created equal.

Safe products are:
✅ Offered by institutions that measure success by impact on people, not profit maximization
✅ Designed with transparent terms and underwriting that looks beyond credit scores
✅ Connected to services and support that help workers build long-term stability

This is why credit unions matter. CDFI credit unions offer gateways to long-term financial well-being. Rooted in trust and community ownership, credit unions are the backbone of a safer, more inclusive financial system.

Example: Border Federal Credit Union in Texas uses Pathways to help members access financial products that build financial capability. "The ability to map each member's journey changes everything. When they see their progress reflected in lower interest rates and better loan terms, they know we're genuinely invested in their success.” - Monica, Financial Counselor, Border FCU

Building a better marketplace means strengthening the institutions that put workers first.

Last year, low-wage workers faced intensifying financial pressures. At Neighborhood Trust, we responded by doing what we do best—connecting people to trustworthy, inclusive institutions designed to serve, not exploit them.

*63% reduced instances of predatory debt
*59% increased their credit scores by a median of 77 points

Beyond individual impacts, we are helping to build a better financial system. Read our Annual Report to learn about our work including:
💡Embedded financial coaching through nearly 90 customer partnerships—including 27 credit unions serving 1.5 million members who have access to safer financial products.

As the year winds down, we’re taking a moment to celebrate two wonderful, longstanding members of our financial coaching team: Ana Paez and Bernard Saavedra. Ana and Bernard both marked ten years of financial coaching with Neighborhood Trust in 2025.

Even just looking at their impact on the TrustPlus team over the past two years alone, we see how powerful their influence is on their clients. Since just 2023, Ana and Bernard have:
* Served over 700 clients across more than 1,500 sessions
* Helped clients reduce their credit card debt by a cumulative $365,000+
* Achieved stellar client satisfaction rates across the board

We know that’s just the tip of the iceberg, given the many more individuals they’ve served over the last decade. And their impact goes well beyond the numbers, enabling clients to become more confident as they work toward their financial goals. What’s more, the insights they’ve gained into the experiences and needs of communities through thousands of financial coaching sessions are informing Neighborhood Trust’s work every day, enabling us to fight for meaningful change on a national scale.

Thank you, Bernard and Ana, for sharing your expertise and dedication with Neighborhood Trust and so many clients! Congratulations on this milestone.

We’re proud to announce the launch of our new insights series on predatory debt, taking a bold step toward reshaping how harmful financial products are defined and addressed.

Over the years, our work with low-income workers has given us a unique, in-depth perspective on the debt products that entangle them in cycles of borrowing and strip them of financial stability.

Our data reveals that 55% of our clients are burdened by predatory debt, and 94% of those hold at least three harmful products.

Drawing on this expertise, we’re introducing a new, expanded definition of predatory debt—one that goes beyond the obvious culprits to include product features and lender practices that jeopardize workers’ financial security. We’re excited to share this work with you!

Cash advance apps. Retail store credit cards. Buy now, pay later apps.

What do these have in common? While they can be convenient options for consumers seeking to access financing options or address cash flow shortages, some have harmful characteristics that lead to negative financial implications for low-income consumers. Many incentivize over-spending and use features designed to keep workers dependent on the product over the long term, which can trap them in a debt cycle.

In Tackling Debt on All Sides - we share our data on the scale and design of these products that cause burdensome debt for our clients.

Our insights also highlight our approach to helping clients trapped in debt cycles stemming from these products. Our Financial Coaches create customized plans that introduce safer products and set workers on a path toward building savings and achieving financial freedom.

In Tackling Debt from All Sides, we share our perspective on the particular harm three short-term cash flow product types can have on workers facing persistent cash flow shortfalls.

While the financial marketplace offers numerous helpful short-term cash flow products, many products contain predatory features which end up trapping workers in debt cycles that negatively impact their financial health.

We outline three high-risk financial products targeting low-income workers who need help meeting monthly expenses: retail store credit cards, cash advance apps, and buy now, pay later apps.

Learn about the specific harmful features of these products that end up increasing workers’ debt burden, and how - in response - our Financial Coaches apply targeted interventions that help clients access safer, more affordable alternatives and collaborate on action plans to eliminate their debt.

Our 2023 Annual Report “Reclaiming Workers’ Money” is live! 🎉

We are proud to announce that in 2023 Neighborhood Trust and our incredible financial coaches helped workers reduce $27.4 million in debt and reclaim $4.6 million in savings. 💰

Read about how we achieved these wins for workers by zeroing in on the marketplace for predatory and exploitative products. Payday loans alone drain $2.2 billion from workers with an average salary of $25,000. In 2023, we helped over 7,000 workers in 44 states keep more of the money they earn and take control over their financial futures. 📉🔍

But we didn’t do it alone. Through innovative partnerships with credit unions and fellow nonprofits dedicated to worker financial security, and thanks to the generous support of our funders and partners, we made exciting progress toward a financial services marketplace that is safer, more accessible, and more equitable for all workers, especially low-wage workers of color and those from immigrant communities. 🌟🤝
