PRESS STATEMENT

ZNYP+ congratulates Government on signing the US$1.5 billion health agreement

The Zambia Network of Young People Living with HIV - ZNYP+ Congratulates the Government of the Republic of Zambia, under the leadership of the Minister of Health, Professor Roma Chilengi, on the signing of the health agreement with the United States on Thursday, 8 October 2026.

This is a significant milestone for the health of Zambians, especially people living with and affected by HIV. The agreement secures support for HIV, TB, malaria and maternal and child health services at a time when continuity of care matters most.

We commend Government for:

• Listening to citizens and civil society. The concerns we raised on 29 June 2026 and 5 October 2026 were taken seriously.

• Protecting the dignity and data rights of Zambians. The removal of the specimen-sharing requirement protects the people we serve.

• Committing to invest more domestically. This is key to sustaining the gains made.

As Government begins implementation, ZNYP+ urges:

1. Funding that reaches community-led and youth-led organisations, which deliver services to adolescents and young people.

2. Meaningful involvement of young people and civil society in implementation, monitoring and accountability.

3. No interruption of services for people on HIV treatment and prevention during the transition.

ZNYP+ stands ready to work with Government and partners to ensure this investment translates into better health outcomes for all Zambians.

Today is International Day of the Girl.

In Zambia, 24% of girls still marry before 18. That is down from 42% in 2002, but far from over.

Access to safe family planning is a basic human right. Yet 257 million women who want to avoid pregnancy aren't using modern contraception.

UNFPA Supplies delivers contraceptives and maternal health medicines to those who need them most. It has helped prevent 254,000 maternal deaths and 1.6 million child deaths (2008-2020).

Leaders must act now: end child marriage and invest in girls' rights.

Know your status. Take the test. Take charge.

Yesterday, our Head of Programmes & Operations, Mr Mubanga Chimumbwa, joined the Sunrise Breakfast Show on Prime Television to talk about HIV testing and counselling, and why it matters for young people in Zambia.

National HIV Testing and Counselling Services Day on 16 October is a reminder that testing is the first step to living a healthy life:

✅ Testing is free, confidential and quick
✅ Counselling gives you support, not judgment
✅ Early diagnosis means early treatment, and people on treatment can live long, healthy lives
✅ Knowing your status protects you, your partner and your family

If you've never tested, or it's been a while, make this the week you go. Visit your nearest health facility or a community testing point. Bring a friend, and encourage your peers to do the same.

Testing is not a sign of weakness. It's a sign that you care about your future.
