It will be a big step that the Yaba Guy Che Research Project will make male engagement in health a focus in Kanyama. Most health programs in Zambia have spoken mainly to women and mothers, leaving men out and creating gaps in the uptake of testing, treatment, and prevention services.

The project will change that by breaking the “health is for women” norm. It will target men directly where they are, using relatable messaging, male peer educators, and community spaces that don’t feel clinical or intimidating, so men no longer avoid care because of stigma, long queues, or the feeling that it’s not “manly” to seek help early.

This approach will improve early detection and treatment outcomes. By bringing services and conversations closer to men in Kanyama, Zambart will work to increase uptake of HIV testing and viral load monitoring, reduce loss to follow-up on ART, and improve screening for NCDs that often go unchecked in men under 50.

The project will also leverage trusted male voices, using language and role models that resonate with Zambian men to make it peer-to-peer rather than top-down health talk. It will link health to everyday life by framing it as part of being a responsible father, partner, and breadwinner, so clinic visits shift from “being sick” to “staying strong for my family.”

Kanyama is a strong fit, and running the project through Zambart will ensure it is evidence-based and embedded in existing community health structures, making it more likely to stick beyond the research phase.

Bottom line: by promoting male engagement, Yaba Guy Che will close a gap that has limited health outcomes for years. If men start showing up earlier and staying in care, the benefits will extend to their partners, kids, and the whole community.

The Zambia Network of Young People Living with HIV - ZNYP+ proudly participated in the CSO Stakeholders Engagement Meeting held in Choma, under the Local Empowerment and Development – Civil Society Leads (LEADS) Project, coordinated through JTCR.

This important platform focused on strengthening partnerships and aligning CSO interventions with the District Integrated Development Plan (IDP). Through meaningful dialogue and collaboration, ZNYP+ successfully formalised partnerships and signed MoUs with key stakeholders including the Ministry of Health Zambia, Ministry of Community Development and Social Services Zambia, Zambia Police Service Victim Support Unit, and Choma Radio.

These partnerships mark a significant step toward strengthening coordinated, community-driven responses in health, social protection, and youth empowerment. ZNYP+ remains committed to working collaboratively to ensure that the voices and needs of young people are reflected in local development priorities.

Together, we are building stronger systems and sustainable impact for our communities.
