Taylor Thursday: “3 Epitaphs” 🎭

This Taylor Thursday, we’re looking back at “3 Epitaphs,” one of Paul Taylor’s earliest works and one of his most delightfully eccentric.

Created in 1956, “3 Epitaphs” explores posture, gesture, and physical comedy through a procession of masked, gray-clad figures moving to early New Orleans jazz funeral music. Robert Rauschenberg, then also at the beginning of his career, designed the distinctive costumes, bringing another layer of wit and experimentation to the work.

The music draws from the New Orleans jazz funeral tradition, where a solemn dirge gives way to the livelier spirit of the “second line,” transforming mourning into a celebration of life.

Last performed by the Company in New York City in 2013 at the David H. Koch Theater, “3 Epitaphs” returns to the stage this November as part of the 2026 New York Season.

Taylor Thursday: “Last Look” 🪞

Created in 1985, Paul Taylor’s “Last Look” takes audiences into one of the darkest and most unsettling worlds in the Taylor repertory.

Originally titled “The City,” the work unfolds among eight large mirrors that evoke the towering surfaces of an urban landscape. Against them, dancers in glamorous evening wear move with urgency and distortion, struggling for control while repeatedly coming face-to-face with their own reflections.

That sense of chaos is heightened by Donald York’s explosive score, Alex Katz’s striking set and costume designs, and Jennifer Tipton’s haunting lighting. Together, these elements create a world that feels fractured, desperate, and impossible to look away from.

Created during a period when Taylor’s work often responded to the social climate around him, “Last Look” examines what can surface when order begins to break down — and what happens when the answers we seek lead us back to ourselves. ⚡

Last performed by the Company in New York City in 2023, “Last Look” returns during the 2026 New York Season.

Taylor Thursday: “Brandenburgs” 🎻

Set to selections from Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Brandenburg Concertos,” Paul Taylor’s “Brandenburgs” brings the music to life through sweeping movement, shifting patterns, and remarkable precision.

Created in 1988, the work moves between powerful ensemble passages and virtuosic solos as the dancers change speed and direction across the stage. Joyful, elegant, and full of momentum, “Brandenburgs” has remained one of Taylor’s most celebrated works for more than three decades. 💫

Last performed by the Company in New York City at The Joyce Theater in 2024, “Brandenburgs” returns to the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center this November.

Taylor Thursday: “Piazzolla Caldera” 💃🔥

With its charged duets, shifting partnerships, and unmistakable tango influence, Paul Taylor’s “Piazzolla Caldera” explores desire, tension, and the human need for connection.

Created in 1997 and set to music by Astor Piazzolla and Jerzy Peterburshsky, the work draws on the many cultural influences that shaped tango while remaining distinctly Taylor. In a dimly lit world of shifting relationships, dancers come together and pull apart through duets, trios, and ensemble passages that feel at once playful, confrontational, and deeply human. 🎶

Rather than recreating traditional tango, Taylor captures its atmosphere — mystery, intensity, humor, and the push and pull between people searching for connection.

Last performed by the Company in New York City in 2023, “Piazzolla Caldera” returns to the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center this November.

Taylor Thursday: “Cloven Kingdom” 🎭

First performed in 1976, Paul Taylor’s “Cloven Kingdom” takes a sharp, and sometimes surreal, look at what happens when the polished surface of civilized society begins to reveal its underbelly.

Set to music by Arcangelo Corelli, Henry Cowell, and Malloy Miller, “Cloven Kingdom” brings together Baroque elegance and driving, percussive energy. Dressed in tailcoats, gowns, and striking mirrored headpieces, the dancers begin in a world of refinement that gradually gives way to something stranger and more be***al. 🎶

There’s humor throughout, but also an edge, as Taylor plays with the contrast between polished appearances and the impulses hiding just beneath the surface.

Taylor Thursday: “Airs” ✨

First performed in 1978, Paul Taylor’s “Airs” has captivated audiences for nearly five decades, and returns this November as part of Paul Taylor Dance Company’s 2026 New York Season. 💫

Set to music by G.F. Handel, “Airs” is one of Taylor’s celebrated works inspired by Baroque music. Across nine movements, the choreography moves between buoyancy and strength, intimacy and expansiveness, with the music shaping the rhythm and architecture of the dance. 🎶

There’s no single storyline to follow. Instead, “Airs” draws you in through musicality, shifting partnerships, and the way Taylor lets movement create its own sense of emotion and atmosphere.

Last performed by the Company in New York City at The Joyce Theater in 2024, “Airs” returns to the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center this fall. ✨
