"Growing up in the states, I never felt represented, because I could never flip through a magazine and see a girl who was wearing a hijab," Halima Aden said.

She spoke about living in a refugee camp in Kenya until the age of seven. She then moved to Minnesota, where she began making history at a young age as her town's first homecoming queen and continued to make waves by just being herself.

A quick bit of information about the Center for Public Scholarship:

The Center for Public Scholarship aims to be the public face of The New School for Social Research & The New School, reaching the public in the New York community & well beyond. One of its strengths is its capacity to respond quickly to social & political problems as they arise.

A few of the multidimensional activities of the Center for Public Scholarship include:

- The flagship journal of The New School for Social Research, Social Research: An International Quarterly

- The Social Research conference series, launched in 1988 and dedicated to enhancing public understanding of critical and contested issues as a way of influencing public policy.

- The Journal Donation Project, a major library assistance program, launched in 1990, with the mission of creating scholarly journal archives in 35 countries that for political or economic reasons have been unable or unwilling to establish their own. (https://bit.ly/2DDTcmb)
