Every child deserves the chance to grow up feeling safe, valued, loved, and encouraged to succeed.

Yet millions are living in homes plagued by domestic violence. And althought they are not the direct target of the violence, just "witnessing" it can profoundly impact their health, emotional well-being, behavior, relationships, and future.

Childhood domestic violence (CDV) affects roughly 15 million children in the US alone. The negative effects can last a lifetime - lingering long after the violence has ended – and keep them from their true potential.

So can the positive effects of compassion, hope, support, and empowerment. Every caring adult has the power to make a difference and just one supportive relationship can change the trajectory of a child's life. Learn more here https://bit.ly/43FXt4j

Women’s Health Month is focused on spotlighting what shapes women's mental and physical health and cementing pathways to a healthy life.

CDV (childhood domestic violence) is one of the least recognized factors shaping women's health – both mental and physical. CDV is a strong predictor of domestic violence and lifelong mental health struggles. But what almost no one knows is that it is also linked to the top 10 leading physical causes of early death, including heart disease, cancer, and stroke.

Awareness of CDV is a strong contributor and understanding of its long-term impact can guide women to self-evaluate, seek support, and prioritize self-care early, to help rewrite the ending of their story. Awareness is the cure. Learn more at https://bit.ly/4up3det

On Mental Health Action Day, let's recognize the often profound impact of childhood domestic violence (CDV) on mental health and resolve to take small actions to help change our outcomes.

Growing up in a home witnessing domestic violence changes the chemistry of a developing brain, creating patterns of hyper-vigilance similar to those experienced by combat veterans. Mental health challenges often start in childhood and lasting well into adulthood.

If you grew up with CDV and are struggling in life, awareness of what you experienced and its impact on your life is the first step to overcoming that impact and reaching your potential. Knowing what to call it, understanding its effects, unlearning what you learned in that home can shift a lifespan.

Our tools are designed to help you at any age and every stage of healing. Start your journey here: https://bit.ly/42zpeev

For many affected by childhood domestic violence (CDV), the word “family” can carry complicated emotions. Family may not have felt safe, supportive, or stable growing up — and the effects can negatively shape a life.

This International Day of Families, let's recognize the impact our family can have on the person we grow up to become. If you grew up living with domestic violence, make a commitment today to build a home and family very different than the one you grew up in – a loving, caring, safe, nurturing, and violence-free one — to ensure your children never have to experience what you did.

You didn't have a choice then. But you have one now. You can be a role model of what's possible after CDV. CDV.org

When people don’t have certainty, they go looking for it.

Not in ideals, but in something immediate. Predictable.

A drink. A drug. A habit.

Not because they want the vice,
but because they want the feeling.

CDV founder Brian Martin discussed this critical need on The Hanley Effect Podcast with Dr. John Dyben and Dr. Rachel Docekal.

Too many people feel ...

Guilty.
Unlovable.
Alone.
Not enough.

These aren’t facts.
They’re beliefs we carry forward due to CDV.

And once we believe them,
we build a life around them.

As CDV founder Brian Martin shared on The Hanley Effect Podcast with Dr. John Dyben and Dr. Rachel Docekal ...

you can’t change the pattern,
until you challenge the lie behind it.

Yesterday kicked off Mental Health Awareness Week, once again spotlighting mental health. In recent years, mounting evidence has shown how critical mental health is to overall health, wellbeing, and a fulfilled life.

But those who grow up with childhood domestic violence (CDV) are already preframed in childhood for mental health struggles later in life. CDV negatively wires a developing brain, encoding negative beliefs that can lead to potential lifelong mental health struggles – PTSD, depression, anxiety, anger, loneliness, low self-esteem, and elevated risk for su***de are just a few. Mental struggles can also trigger significant physical and behavior challenges that can make the prognosis even worse.

But there is hope and a path to healing. Download our 10-minute Step-By-Step Guide to expose how CDV may have impacted you...and start the journey to better mental health and a more fulfilled life. https://bit.ly/4dkgFsR

Today was Mother's Day. Many who grew up with childhood domestic violence (CDV) may feel conflicted. "Mother" symbolizes love, nurture, safety, and certainty. But in their home, mom may not have been able to ensure that safety and certainty, essential to early child development.

Did you experience CDV? Ever ask your mom if SHE did? Many did...and then just repeated what was learned in that home. What you don't know can impact your relationships – as CDV is the single best predictor of domestic violence – and your future.

Conversation transforms the meaning. It can bring clarity, new compassion for your mom...and the awareness to overcome the cycle. Call your mom and ask that tough question that can start a new chapter in both your lives – "Did you grow up witnessing domestic violence?"

Today is National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day, in midst of Children's Mental Health Week (May 3-9)...and May is Mental Health Awareness Month — placing mental health front and center in public discussion, along with major factors that impact it.

One such factor is growing up with Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) like childhood domestic violence (CDV). According to research, that can have a profound and lifelong impact on some or all key areas of life.

But unlearning what was learned in that home can help rewrite your story. The first step is awareness, as many who experience CDV don't even realize they did.

Take this 3-minute screening to see if you grew up with CDV and get on a path to good mental health. https://bit.ly/42iaalh
