ies. What is Rice & Dreams doing?
• We offer tasty, good, home-cooked meals and the social benefit of group meals at a convenient community location for a low budget price.
• Prepared, served and eaten in a family-friendly environment, all dishes are made with high-quality ingredients that are organic and locally grown when possible and prepared from members’ favorite recipes.
• Because we buy and prepare food together, Rice & Dreams helps members afford better quality ingredients and access to home-cooked meals that nourish and heal us. Why?
• To bring neighbors and friends together around meals that heal us from the inside out, and also work towards positive change in our world that will heal us from the outside in.
• We believe that by coming together, we can work around the current food system, which mostly offers corporate-controlled, high-calorie, low-nutrient food that makes us sick and undermines local food systems.
• We want to inspire YOU to join us so we can get to know one another! Join us in the Sunset Park at the flagpole from 12-3 PM for our FREE outreach meals to taste our food and learn more! Sunday, October 2

It is our hope that by Fall 2011, we will be able to provide a weekly, affordable good meal for Sunset Park Community members, but we can't do it alone. Join us! We need your help and support. Please let us know if you can help us with any of our big challenges. WISH LIST:

After four years of collaborating and sharing around cooking and eating healthy food to build healthy communities, Rice and Dreams’ core committee has made the decision to close the organization in 2014 and beyond.

Since we formed Rice and Dreams in 2010, we have worked as an all-volunteer organization with our Sunset Park community to cultivate skills and relationships around food as a means to self-careand healing beyond the kitchen table. We worked towards this in a couple different ways: 1) by building strong relationships to the food we eat and prepare, 2) by sharing skills around cooking in new andtraditional ways, and 3) by facilitating meaningful connections between community members.

The decision to close Rice and Dreams is not because of the lack of need in our Sunset Park, Brooklyn community, but because our dedicated core volunteers have flapped their wings and moved on to do great things for food and social justice. We feel this effort deserves a capacity we can no longer deliver. The decision to complete our work as an organization is bittersweet.

On behalf of Rice and Dreams, we humbly thank the many meal participants and volunteers who madeRice and Dreams a place to heal the community from within. We also thank St. Jacobi Church for giving us a home to host the meals.

Please stay tunned to receive more information about amazing groups doing great work in Sunset Park.

Our first community meal was a big success. The Arroz Relleno was delicious and fed us all. We hosted four Sunset Park based worker cooperatives including: Beyond Care Childcare Cooperative, Golden Steps Elder Care Cooperative, Si Se Puede! Cleaning Cooperative, and Trusty Amigos Pet Care. It gave us a chance to nourish them and creative space for sharing across coop and learning more about each other. Next regular meal is Monday, July 21 where we will plan for our next larger community meal. We are looking for our next group to nourish!

Sat 6/21: Learn to make arroz relleno + Meet your local worker cooperatives

The New York harvest season is here, and so are Rice and Dreams meals. We are experimenting with a new model. In addition to our regular dinners, we are planning a few larger community meals to support and nourish local groups and their members who are doing great work to support our neighborhood.

For our first meal of the season, we will host a dinner for three worker cooperatives based in Sunset Park, and all Rice and Dreams members are invited.

We will be cooking for about 75 people. Come to help prepare the meal and to learn more about how a cooperative works and what these particular cooperatives do. They are women-owned, women-run and working in various ways to take care of families in our neighborhood and beyond.
