We’re so excited for our first Storytime with the Symphony of the season on Saturday, October 17 with narrator Diego Chiri! 📖❤️

We’re kicking things off with “When They Tore Down the Palace” by Washington Heights author Adria Quiñones, a story inspired by the historic movie theater that once stood at Broadway and 181st Street.

Join Diego, Adria, and WHCO Strings as we bring this piece of Washington Heights history to life through bilingual storytelling and music! 🎶🤍

Meet Diego Chiri (Diego Chiri), narrator for Storytime with the Symphony, WHCO’s concert series for our youngest audiences.

This season, we have three wonderful stories to share with you, each paired with music performed by a different WHCO chamber ensemble.

October 17: “When They Tore Down” the Palace written by Adria Quiñones and illustrated by Richy Sánchez Ayala, featuring WHCO Strings 🎻 (AdriaQ & Richy Sánchez Ayala)

February 27: “Songbird in the Light” by Billy Porter and Chris Clarkson, illustrator Charly Palmer, featuring WHCO Brass 🎺 (, Chris Clarkson, Charly Palmer)

March 20: “Kitten’s First Full Moon” written & illustrated Kevin Henkes, featuring WHCO Winds & Percussion 🪈🥁 (Kevin Henkes 📚)

Through each story, children will discover new instruments, sounds, and music as we explore the orchestra together, one story at a time.

Thank you to City Council Member and Friends of 187 for including us in the Donetta Riley Way street co-naming ceremony this weekend, on Donetta’s birthday! 💜 WHCO musicians (Lindsay, James, and Raul) performed “Hello Everybody” and “Pata Pata” to honor Donetta’s legacy here in Washington Heights, and as well as a joyful rendition of “Happy Birthday.”

Donetta Riley was a beloved member of the Washington Heights community. She ran the arts education program at P.S. 187, later directed “Music Together,” and generously shared her passion for the arts at community events. On October 3rd at 12pm, join us in honoring Donetta’s legacy with a Street Naming Ceremony hosted by the office of Council Member Carmen De La Rosa (), along with performances by WHCO musicians.
