History reminds us that every great awakening began with faithful men who refused to stay silent. Now we must ask ourselves: Is the Church awake?

“Christians owned slaves.”

No. People who rejected Christ’s words owned slaves.

Judge Christianity by Christ, not by the sins of those who claim His name.

Roger Williams believed that faith could not be forced and conscience did not belong to the government.

In 1635, Massachusetts Bay authorities sentenced Williams to banishment after years of conflict over his teachings—including religious liberty, limits on civil government in matters of faith, and his objections to English claims over Native lands. Facing banishment, he fled during the bitter winter of 1635–36.

Williams eventually founded Providence in 1636, creating a community where civil government was separated from religious belief and people were given broad liberty of conscience. He described Providence as a refuge for those “distressed of conscience.”

Nearly 150 years before the First Amendment, Roger Williams was already defending a principle that would become central to American religious liberty: government should not dictate a person’s faith.
