Our partner, the International AIDS Society (IAS), has announced that it is seeking proposals to develop a five-year strategy for the new IAS HIV Vaccine Programme. Individual consultants or firms are invited to submit proposals for a plan that will build on the Enterprise’s past work and help position IAS take HIV vaccine research and development forward. Open-access, full text article: Localized diversity at key V2 epitope residues drive anti- antibody maturation toward breadth, according to scientists Protocol C

Understanding the molecular basis of HIV Env-specific broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) development is key for vaccine design. Landais et al. find that glycan heterogeneity played a role in the activation of V2 apex PCT64 bnAbs precursor and that viral evolution was similar to CAP256, another...

Scientists at Simon Fraser University & The Scripps Research Institute show that immunization of mice with synthetic mimetics of mammalian oligomannose induces neutralizing abs against . Mimetics were derived from the Gram-negative plant bacterium Rhizobium radiobacter!

Neutralizing antibodies to oligomannose glycans on HIV Env are difficult to elicit, possibly due to B cell tolerance. Here, Pantophlet et al. synthesize mimetics based on a bacterial oligosaccharide and show that they evoke HIV-neutralizing antibody responses in animals with a human Ig repertoire...

HIV Vaccine Trials Network scientists show that anti-HIV antibody VRC01 is well tolerated and maintains its immunologic activity post-infusion in 88 volunteers

In a phase 1 trial, Kenneth Mayer and colleagues investigate the safety and tolerability of VRC01, a broadly neutralizing anti-HIV antibody.

How old is HIV? Check your knowledge by reading Part 1 of a series of 5 posts leading up to World AIDS Day :

At approximately 100 years old, HIV is a relatively recent arrival on the human virus scene. But its roots stretch back much farther. Understanding where the virus has come from can help us understand where it’s going — and how to stop it — say evolutionary biologists.

Scientists at Fred Hutch are studying how the microbiome alters the immune system’s response to vaccines. Their work is already providing new insights on interactions between microbes in the body and the immune system that have implications for improving many types of vaccines.

Infant immune responses to HIV could provide clues to help build protective or therapeutic HIV vaccines.

How does a pre-existing schistosome infection affect HIV acquisition and disease progression in men and women?

Infection with schistosome parasitic worms has an important role in HIV transmission, especially for women, and may accelerate HIV disease progression, according to research published in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases. Women with schistosomiasis had a three-fold increased risk in becoming infected...
