Last week, Friends of Freiburg Board member was in Berlin and gave her talk “We the People of Minneapolis: Defending Our City and Standing Up to ICE” to an interested audience with the Berlin Alumni Freiburg Club. She has previously given this talk in March at the FoF Annual Gala Dinner in New York City.
Her talk focused on how tens of thousands of Minneapolis residents came together this winter, organizing neighborhood networks to protect their immigrant neighbors during Operation Metro Surge, when 3,000 ICE agents were deployed in the largest federal enforcement operation in U.S. history.
She shared her own involvement in grassroots organizing, rapid response networks, and mutual aid efforts while ordinary citizens mobilized peaceful protests, vigils, singing resistance groups, and other forms of nonviolent engagement in the subzero Minnesota temperatures in the face of a constitutional crisis.
We thank the Berlin Alumni Club of Freiburg University and their organizing members - Dr. phil. Silke Engel, Margit Ehrenfried-Arntz, Dr. Jochen Wolter and Dr. Roland Hoffmann-Theinert at Kanzlei Görg - for providing the lovely space and the opportunity for Sarah to share her personal experiences to resist ICE during this challenging time.
