Last week, Friends of Freiburg Board member was in Berlin and gave her talk “We the People of Minneapolis: Defending Our City and Standing Up to ICE” to an interested audience with the Berlin Alumni Freiburg Club. She has previously given this talk in March at the FoF Annual Gala Dinner in New York City.

Her talk focused on how tens of thousands of Minneapolis residents came together this winter, organizing neighborhood networks to protect their immigrant neighbors during Operation Metro Surge, when 3,000 ICE agents were deployed in the largest federal enforcement operation in U.S. history.

She shared her own involvement in grassroots organizing, rapid response networks, and mutual aid efforts while ordinary citizens mobilized peaceful protests, vigils, singing resistance groups, and other forms of nonviolent engagement in the subzero Minnesota temperatures in the face of a constitutional crisis.

We thank the Berlin Alumni Club of Freiburg University and their organizing members - Dr. phil. Silke Engel, Margit Ehrenfried-Arntz, Dr. Jochen Wolter and Dr. Roland Hoffmann-Theinert at Kanzlei Görg - for providing the lovely space and the opportunity for Sarah to share her personal experiences to resist ICE during this challenging time.

Last week after the FRIENDS OF FREIBURG 9th Annual Dinner, two ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONS were held with generous support and sponsorship from the German Center for Research and Innovation (DWIH) New York underscoring Friends of Freiburg’s commitment to strengthening the Freiburg / New York corridor, with key initiatives that include the development of a mentoring program, nurturing transatlantic connections in entrepreneurship, and cultivating discussions in the performing arts. The forum brought together scientists from the University of Freiburg, health science entrepreneurs, tech sector stakeholders, venture capital representatives, New York-based alumni, and distinguished personalities from the performing arts.

“Building Connections between Freiburg and New York in Science, Research, and Entrepreneurship” was moderated by Dr. Wilke, Friends of Freiburg Board member, biotech entrepreneur and venture capitalist.

· . Harald Schützeichel, Director of the Freiburg Entrepreneurship Institute (FRENI)

"Music & Voices in Uncertain, Changing Times”, moderated by Stephens Sarah, examined the rapidly changing landscape of classical music and opera. Topics included shifts in funding and programming, their impact on artistic choices and institutional priorities, and the growing generational divide in audiences, alongside efforts to engage new and younger listeners.

The panelists included:
· @ David Rosenmeyer, Argentinian conductor and composer, Music Director of Fairfield County Chorale, and Associate Conductor of Oratorio Society of New York
· Dayen, Argentinian stage director and mezzo-soprano with international opera credits
· Woolsey, longtime WQXR announcer, television host on WNET, and recently elected President and Co-Artistic Director of the Gerda Lissner Foundation.

We at Friends of Freiburg thank all our guests and contributors for making our 9th Annual Gala Dinner & Roundtables such a special occasion and for sustaining our continued commitment to these important and valuable relationships.

A magical evening with artist Alexander Polzin at Tambaran Gallery in NYC

On Friday evening, Friends of Freiburg hosted a private reception with acclaimed Berlin-based artist Alexander Polzin at Tambaran Gallery on the Upper East Side. While enjoying sparkling wines from Germany, guests enjoyed a private viewing of the impressive collection of paintings and sculptures by Alexander and were treated to a captivating Q&A with the artist. In a very intimate exchange, we learned of the influences on his art, the artistic process behind his intricate sculptures, his connection to German composer Johann Sebastian Bach, and how deeply his art, everything he does, is inspired by music. Quoting the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, “Without music life would be a mistake”, Polzin couldn’t agree more.

Thank you to Friends of Freiburg President Jeffrey Himmel for facilitating this delightful evening and to Maureen Zarember and her amazing staff at Tambaran Gallery for hosting, and with deepest gratitude to Alexander Polzin for sharing his time and insights! What a truly special evening thanks to all!
