Philippine Jesuit Foundation

Philippine Jesuit Foundation PJF is the official fundraising organization of the Phil. Jesuit Province in the US Why do the Philippine Jesuits need your help? We thank you for your help.

As soon as a young man desiring to become a priest enters the Society of Jesus at Sacred Heart Novitiate (SHN), Quezon City, the Philippine Province takes care of his board and lodging, his education and basic formation for the next eleven or twelve years. At the end of this period, the Jesuit is ordained a priest. Because of the desire of the Society of Jesus that this priest or brother becomes

an expert in his field, he is usually sent for further studies, called “Special Studies”. Usually, this is a doctorate degree; in some cases, a master’s degree. The “Special Studies” is normally pursued outside the Philippines, often in Europe or the United States, and is funded by the Philippine Province. Once this priest or brother obtains his degree, he is finally assigned to the apostolate. More often than not, he is sent to an educational institution, like the university. Only then does the Philippine Province cease financial support. The educational or other apostolic institutions then provides for his needs. Upon retirement, the Jesuit returns to the auspices of the Philippine Province. The Province provides for board, lodging and medical care, until he dies and is buried at Sacred Heart Novitiate (SHN). And so it is the Philippine Province who takes care of the young man in his formation, stretching for about 16 years, and in retirement, for another 15 - 20 years, until his death and burial at SHN (where he begins and also ends his religious life)—having given all of his life to God! Many alumni of our universities and schools are understandably more than eager to donate to their alma mater, and we thank them for their generosity. Unfortunately, they assume that they are also donating to the Philippine Province --which is not true. That is why we appeal to you that the Philippine Province, not just Jesuit universities and schools, needs your massive support! When you donate, write your check to “Philippine Jesuit Foundation” and at the memo line indicate: “Formation Fund” and/or “Elderly and Infirm Fund”.

The annual visitation of the Provincial to a Jesuit community is more than a formality or administrative requirement. In the spirituality of the Society of Jesus, it is a concrete expression of communion, discernment, and shared mission.
When the Provincial visits, he comes as a brother, a shepherd, and a companion in mission. His presence makes visible our belonging to a body that is larger than our local community. We are reminded that our works in Ateneo de Davao University are not isolated efforts, but part of the universal mission of the Church entrusted to the Society.

The visitation is also a moment of listening and discernment. The Provincial hears the joys, struggles, hopes, and questions of the community. It is an opportunity to realign our apostolic works with the greater mission, to be renewed in obedience, and to deepen our fidelity to the call we first received.

Most importantly, the visit is an experience of encouragement. To be seen, heard, and affirmed strengthens fraternal bonds and rekindles zeal. It reminds us that our labor in the vineyard is shared, supported, and guided. Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.

The Meeting of Superiors and Directors of Works (MSDW) of the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus is being held on 15–16 January 2026 at the Cardinal Sin Center, Loyola School of Theology, Ateneo de Manila University campus. The gathering brings together Jesuit superiors, directors of works, and lay mission partners for a focused process of province-wide planning and alignment.

Centered on the development of the Province Plan, the meeting serves as a working assembly for evaluating current apostolic realities, clarifying priorities, and setting strategic directions for the coming years. Through guided discernment, structured consultations, and collaborative workshops, participants examine how Jesuit communities and apostolic works can respond more effectively to emerging global, national, pastoral, social, and institutional challenges.

Grounded in Ignatian discernment and shared responsibility for mission, the MSDW seeks to ensure coherence between vision and practice across the Province. By listening attentively to one another and to the needs of the wider Church and society, the gathering aims to shape a Province Plan that is mission-driven, responsive, and rooted in the service of faith, justice, and reconciliation. Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.

We extend our condolences to the Banatao Family and the PhilDev Foundation on the death of one of the most prominent Filipinos in the Tech and Venture Capital world, Diosdado Banatao.
Dado was an alumnus of Ateneo de Tuguegarao High School and became one of the benefactors of PJF, establishing a matching fund for the benefit of the Elderly and Infirm Filipino Jesuits. May he rest in peace.

Dear Friends and Family,

The Banatao Family regrets to share the sad news that our beloved Dado passed peacefully on December 25, 2025, surrounded by family and friends. He was 5 months shy of his 80th birthday, and ultimately succumbed to complications from a neurological disorder that hit him late in his life.

We are mourning his loss, but take comfort from the time spent with him during this Christmas season, and that his fight with this disease is over. We thank everyone for all the messages of support and prayers during this time.

We will be sharing news about a celebration of life in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we kindly ask to please respect our family's privacy as we plan. In lieu of sending direct messages to Maria or the family via email or social media, we encourage you to share any positive memories, stories, images, or messages of support in the Messages section of a dedicated website in Dado's memory.
With deep appreciation for your thoughts and prayers,

The Banatao Family

The ten presidents of Jesuit schools and universities in the Philippine Province met at the Ateneo de Manila Jesuit Residence on October 5 for a day of discussion and planning aimed at strengthening collaboration across institutions. The meeting fostered a spirit of shared mission and mutual support as the leaders explored concrete ways to work together more effectively. Among the emerging initiatives are efforts to bring together key administrators from the different schools to coordinate and align programs in areas such as procurement, data and IT systems, cybersecurity, human resource development, and the spiritual formation of higher education leaders. These collaborative steps reflect the ongoing commitment of Jesuit education to shared discernment, stewardship, and the holistic formation of both personnel and institutions in service of the mission for the greater glory of God and the service of neighbor.
