Building on APN and Next Gen’s vision, African Peacebuilding and Developmental Dynamics (APDD) advances African-led research and scholarship on peacebuilding, governance, and developmental changes in conflict-affected countries and sub-regions in Africa Launched in March 2012, the African Peacebuilding Network (APN) supports independent African research on conflict-affected countries and neighbori

ng regions of the continent, as well as the integration of African knowledge into global policy communities. The APN promotes the visibility of African peacebuilding knowledge among global and regional centers of scholarly analysis and practical action and makes it accessible to key policymakers at the United Nations and other multilateral, regional, and national policymaking institutions. The APN accomplishes this by facilitating the transformation of the quality and scale of African research and consolidating the contributions of African researchers and analysts, thereby connecting them with other African scholars, policy analysts, practitioners, and networks focusing on issues of peacebuilding, as well as with other policymaking communities around the world. In order to advance African debates on peacebuilding and promote African perspectives, the APN offers competitive research grants and funds other forms of targeted support, including strategy meetings, seminars, grantee workshops, commissioned studies, and the publication and dissemination of research findings.

The African Peacebuilding and Developmental Dynamics (APDD) program, formerly the APN and Next Gen of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), mourns the passing of Professor Fantu Cheru, pioneer Chairman, and founding member of the APN Advisory Board and Selection Committee.

"As a pioneering chair of the APN advisory board, Fantu Cheru’s leadership successfully laid the foundation and set the standard for an impactful fellowship program. He contributed immensely to the direction, vision, and capacity of the program to support the emergence of a thriving community of African peacebuilding and development scholars. His unwavering commitment, integrity, passion, and mentorship were central to the APN’s vision of advancing African-led research, bridging the research-policy divide, and amplifying African perspectives in global debates on peacebuilding, development, and security."

NEW on Kujenga Amani | “Getting Conservation Right in Ghana’s Artisanal Sector: Aligning Policy with Evidence and the Realities of Coastal Communities” by Ifesinachi Okafor-Yarwood

“Amid growing concerns over declining fish stocks and increasing pressure on marine resources, Ghana’s coastal communities continue to face the difficult challenge of balancing conservation with livelihood survival. Artisanal fisheries remain central to food security, employment, and social stability along the country’s coastline. The closed season policy, first introduced for the industrial trawl sector in 2016, was extended to the artisanal sector in 2019 after an unsuccessful attempt in 2018, following strong opposition from local fisherfolk over the timing and implementation of the policy. Since then, the policy has been intermittently implemented across the artisanal sector.”

NEW on KUJENGA AMANI | “Reframing the Debate: African Universities and the Ethical Integration of Generative AI in Teaching and Research” by Daniel Lifuka Sichinga

“The University of Cape Town (UCT) was among the first universities in South Africa, and possibly on the African continent, to disable its Artificial Intelligence (AI) detection protocols in the plagiarism checker Turnitin. UCT acknowledges that generative AI (GenAI) technologies, such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Dall-E, which are designed to produce new content, including text, audio, code, images, simulations, and videos, have significant potential to enhance productivity for students, academics, and staff. At the same time, the university recognises that, without ethical guardrails, these tools can pose serious challenges to assessment, teaching, and learning.”
