Promise Project PROMISE PROJECT is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping underserved children with learning disabilities (LD) get the support they need to learn.

PROMISE PROJECT recognizes that without the right educational intervention, many of these children will fail or drop out of school, making them much more vulnerable to substance abuse and criminal activity–and to become stuck in the cycle of poverty. By providing them the path to an effective education, this work transforms children's lives.

Education Coordination has been part of our model from the get go. We know that every family deserves access to an advocate who can help them turn evaluation recommendations into real services.

This year, we are helping to fund research to assess the effectiveness of the Promise model so that other organizations can incorporate our gold standard process and ensure more families get the support they need.

Former Promise Project Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. Enitan Marcelle, is conducting a study to investigate exactly how and why Education Coordination works. Dr. Marcelle’s findings will determine which strategies work best and where barriers remain so that we can continue improving our own model while also providing a roadmap for schools, clinics, and policymakers interested in replicating and scaling similar programs.

This study is being funded through Understood.org’s NeuroEquity Research Collaborative, where Promise is proud to serve as a founding member. Together, we are working to ensure that children from all backgrounds have equal access to the support and advocacy they deserve.

Our Early Promise initiative has always focused on identifying children at risk for learning disabilities as early as possible, before they fall too far behind in school. This year, we’ve taken our mission to the next level with the launch of our Train-The-Trainer model – creating new literacy leaders and building a network of in-school experts who can sustain and expand our work.

Early Promise is a scalable model that provides customized training to school staff so they can better identify and understand dyslexia, deepen their knowledge of the reading brain, and implement our proprietary Early Promise Intervention Connect (EPIC) assessment.

Train-the-Trainer teaches educators how to recognize and respond to dyslexia and reading difficulties in kindergarten classrooms, and gives them the tools to teach these crucial skills to their colleagues.

Active in 20 schools across all five boroughs, Early Promise now reaches more than 1,000 students in over 50 classrooms. Our work spans both general and special education settings, guaranteeing that children receive consistent, accurate identification and support no matter which program they’re in.

Train-The-Trainer cements these skills in the school system, leading to better outcomes not just for individual classrooms, but for entire school communities.

Together, we can continue to make a real difference in the lives of these young learners.

A learning disability doesn’t just affect how a child performs in school, it can also deeply impact their emotional well-being. Students who struggle to read or keep up with peers often experience anxiety, low self-esteem, and depression. Parents, too, can feel overwhelmed, helpless, and unsure how to help their child.

A Promise neuropsychological evaluation does more than identify learning disabilities, it provides a roadmap for hope. By uncovering the root causes of a child’s struggles, we give families clarity, a plan for moving forward, and peace of mind. This holistic approach ensures we’re not missing underlying factors that may contribute to both learning and mental health challenges.

At Promise, the feedback session after a child’s evaluation is where transformation begins. Our specially trained Education Coordinators sit with families to explain the results in clear, compassionate language, breaking down complex reports, outlining both the child’s strengths and the supports they need to succeed in school, and beyond.

We see time and again that when a child’s learning needs are addressed, their emotional health improves as well. Almost every day, our team hears from parents that finally knowing how to understand their child lifts an enormous burden and benefits the entire family.
