The Ukrainian Institute of America is opening its doors for an open house honoring the 35th Ukrainian Independence Day.

On Sunday, August 23, we welcome you for a full day of celebrating Ukrainian culture, creativity, and community.
The day’s program will feature special exhibitions, screenings of films by Ukrainian filmmakers, a food court offering Ukrainian cuisine, and a marketplace featuring Ukrainian artisans and vendors.

There is no entrance fee for the event; however, donations are appreciated.

Today we honor the Day of Ukrainian Statehood.

The story of Ukrainian statehood spans more than a thousand years. Through every era, generations have built, defended, renewed, and preserved their nation.

Empires have risen and fallen. Borders have shifted. Yet the legacy of Ukrainian statehood has endured.

Today, we celebrate not only the resilience of a people, but the continuity of a nation whose roots run deep and whose future is being written with courage every day.

Today, Ukraine marks Constitution Day, commemorating the adoption of the Constitution of independent Ukraine on June 28, 1996.

Approved after an historic overnight session of the Verkhovna Rada, it became the legal foundation of the modern Ukrainian state and enshrined the principles of sovereignty, democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental rights and freedoms.

Yet Ukraine's constitutional tradition reaches back much further. In 1710, Hetman Pylyp Orlyk authored the Treaties and Resolutions of the Rights and Freedoms of the Zaporozhian Host—widely recognized as one of the world's earliest modern constitutional documents. It outlined the separation of legislative, executive, and judicial powers and placed limits on executive authority, reflecting democratic ideals that were remarkably advanced for their time.

As Ukrainians defend their nation today, they also uphold a centuries-old tradition: the belief that freedom is protected by law, accountable government, and the enduring will of a people determined to live in a democratic state.

Ukrainian students continue to reach remarkable heights, even as Russia’s brutal war against their homeland has defined much of their youth.

Congratulations to Ukraine’s medalists at the GENIUS Olympiad, whose talent, perseverance, and hard work earned international recognition. 🇺🇦

Kudos as well to Daria Perekopska of Dnipro, who recently made history as the first Ukrainian ever to become the overall winner of the European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI), outperforming 248 participants from 67 countries.

These young Ukrainians are proving that even in the face of war, excellence, determination, and innovation continue to thrive.

game based on the Kyivan Rus manuscripts “Princess Olha
and Her Ascent to Power,” all in the style of “Dungeons &
Dragons.” Come expand your knowledge about Ukraine in an
interactive, fun, and unique way!
The evening will begin with a special performance of “Olha of
Kyiv” by acclaimed puppeteer and performer Zlata Godunova.
