His character surfaced moments after the clock hit zero.
As the Georgia Bulldogs celebrated their 20-17 win at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday night, he remained on the field while his Crimson Tide teammates shuffled to the locker room.
The ABC/ESPN cameras surrounded Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton.
Reporter Holly Rowe stood with Stockton at midfield.
His field.
And Bama quarterback Keelon Russell waited patiently and politely for the Gunner Stockton interview to end.
Keelon Russell stood outside the range of the TV cameras.
One report indicates a Bama staffer suggested to Keelon that he head on into the locker room.
Keelon Russell stood still and stood strong.
You see, while he lost the game on his home field, 19-year-old Keelon Russell wanted to show his class by congratulating the veteran Georgia quarterback.
Keelon Russell had never met Gunner Stockon.
Quite frankly, it didn’t matter, for Keelon was raised to show sportsmanship and humility, win or lose.
It had to be very painful for Keelon Russell to watch Gunner Stockton being interviewed in a victorious moment- it was a moment Keelon was hoping he would be experiencing.
Keelon stood patiently for nearly 3 minutes- it must have felt like an hour.
But the world has learned a valuable lesson after the Bama quarterback waited patiently to congratulate the winner.
It learned that class matters.
And Keelon Russell’s class is to be admired.
