June 5 marks a solemn moment in the history of Sailors’ Snug Harbor.

On this day in 1801, our founder and benefactor, Captain Robert Richard Randall, passed away. Just four days earlier, he finalized his will. In it, he entrusted his estate to a group of New York’s public, civic, and religious leaders, charging them with building an asylum to be known as “Sailors’ Snug Harbor,” dedicated to supporting aged and worn-out sailors. He declared that this institution should endure “perpetually” and be governed “forever” by these civic-minded stewards.

More than two centuries later, we are honored to carry forward your mission, Capt. Randall. Your vision lives on.

Today we received two phone calls from mariners crediting boxing for keeping them fit at their age (80+) and reminding me to shape up. Coincidentally, they both trained with former featherweight world champion Sandy Saddler who they told me had a gym at the National Maritime Union building here in NYC. Then somethings about ship gyms, Kid Gavilán, and Philadelphia fighters. It got me wondering: when I’m 80, will I be telling people about the day I finally learned how to feed our label maker correctly?

One unique aspect of working with retired Merchant Mariners is hearing the stories of mariners who were meant to be on a voyage that later had a tragedy. One recent story was for the SS Golden Dolphin, where 9 crew were lost in 1982 on March 7. Today, we pause to remember the crew of the SS Golden Dolphin, lost after an explosion and fire in the Atlantic Ocean on March 6, 1982, which led to the ship’s sinking on March 7, 1982.
The tragedy claimed the lives of nine crew members. Their bravery, service, and sacrifice at sea will never be forgotten.

To update and echo a quote by Don C. Seitz: Sailors’ Snug Harbor is not a charity, but a recognition of the men and women who gave their lives to the waters - far and near- bringing prosperity to the nation, wealth to its cities, and widening the world.
