Just a reminder to our Facebook community: We are always looking to connect with retired U.S. merchant mariners who could benefit from a little extra support to make retirement more comfortable.

If you know someone who may qualify, please reach out or share this post. Often, the mariners who could benefit the most from our assistance are the hardest to find.

Your share could help us reach someone in need and make a meaningful difference in their life.

NYC legend Curtis Sliwa has helped us create a special outreach video to help inform U.S. Mariners about our organization and the support we provide.

We would greatly appreciate your help in sharing this video with your friends, family, and maritime contacts. Every share helps us reach more Mariners who may benefit from our services.

Thank you for supporting our outreach efforts and helping us spread the word!

June 5 marks a solemn moment in the history of Sailors’ Snug Harbor.

On this day in 1801, our founder and benefactor, Captain Robert Richard Randall, passed away. Just four days earlier, he finalized his will. In it, he entrusted his estate to a group of New York’s public, civic, and religious leaders, charging them with building an asylum to be known as “Sailors’ Snug Harbor,” dedicated to supporting aged and worn-out sailors. He declared that this institution should endure “perpetually” and be governed “forever” by these civic-minded stewards.

More than two centuries later, we are honored to carry forward your mission, Capt. Randall. Your vision lives on.

Today we received two phone calls from mariners crediting boxing for keeping them fit at their age (80+) and reminding me to shape up. Coincidentally, they both trained with former featherweight world champion Sandy Saddler who they told me had a gym at the National Maritime Union building here in NYC. Then somethings about ship gyms, Kid Gavilán, and Philadelphia fighters. It got me wondering: when I’m 80, will I be telling people about the day I finally learned how to feed our label maker correctly?

Happy National Maritime Day — May 22nd — our favorite holiday here at Sailors’ Snug Harbor! ⚓️ Please take a moment today to thank as many U.S. Merchant Mariners as you can for their dedication and service over the years. Their hard work keeps our nation moving every single day, and we’re proud to be here for them in retirement. Fair winds and following seas to all who sail! 🌊

Thank you to the Connecticut Maritime Association and Informa Markets for welcoming us to CMA Shipping 2026. We’re here to remind the industry that Sailors’ Snug Harbor is here to help retired mariners live more comfortably.

One unique aspect of working with retired Merchant Mariners is hearing the stories of mariners who were meant to be on a voyage that later had a tragedy. One recent story was for the SS Golden Dolphin, where 9 crew were lost in 1982 on March 7. Today, we pause to remember the crew of the SS Golden Dolphin, lost after an explosion and fire in the Atlantic Ocean on March 6, 1982, which led to the ship’s sinking on March 7, 1982.
The tragedy claimed the lives of nine crew members. Their bravery, service, and sacrifice at sea will never be forgotten.
