Festival that began it all, Howl! Happening is a space of untamed creativity. Howl Happening curates exhibitions and stages live events that showcase the historical legacy and contemporary culture of the East Village and Lower East Side. It is also dedicated to preserving the archives of artists who spent their creative lives working in this vibrant community and houses the Estates of artist Artur

o Vega and the beloved performance artist, Tom Murrin aka “The Alien Comic.” The history of the East Village is still being written. The mix of rock and roll, social justice, art and performance, community activism, gay rights and culture, immigrants, fashion, and nightlife are even more relevant now and Howl Happening aims to shine a light on art and social history in the heart of the community where groundbreaking creativity and influential ideas still thrive.

For the next month at Howl! we are presenting two exhibitions from the collections of Arturo Vega. Our galleries are only 2 blocks apart so it’s easy to experience both shows.
Arturo Vega - the merch master, is at 6 e 1st Street (near Bowery) & Richard Hambleton - Blood & Glitter, is at 250 Bowery! Both are open 12 to 6pm, Wednesday to Sunday. Sandra Schulman talks about Arturo Vega, the Ramones logo and more, today 5pm at Howl! 6 East 1st Street, free
And our neighbors Dark Matter Coffee are providing free coffee this afternoon too. Their special edition Arturo Vega ‘Empire’ art coffee bean 12oz. bags are available at the gallery for a special price of $20 along with our silkscreen ‘merch master’ Ts. Come on over.

Arturo Vega - the merch master - opens at Howl! 6 East 1st Street 10003 Friday April 10. 6 to 9. You must rsvp if you don’t want to be stuck in a long line outside as the response has been incredible. Go to the link for RSVP in our bio here or at howlarts.org .Really.
After the Friday April 10 opening, the exhibition is open 12 to 6 wednesday to sunday after april 10 if you don’t want to be in a crowd or line. We love Arturo too and we want you to enjoy your visit to this show of his world or merch and personal items that have never been shared before.

the richard hambleton exhibition at howl will be be closed thursday and friday, april 2 & 3. We will reopen Saturday April 4. We had a flood of water coming down our ceilings and walls from 3 floors above and it has been stopped for now- we need to clean the gallery and remount Richard’s paintings in his exhibition ‘Blood & Glitter’! Come back this weekend. xx

Brian Butterick turned 70 today ~ you know, up there.
Here he is singing Swan Song on his dulcimer. Recorded by Doug Bressler in 2019. We’ve paired it with a handful of lovely photos from his 1995 Hattie Hathaway photo session with Brooke Williams for Julian Fleisher’s Drag Queens of New York book. Yes, some photos acquired cosmic crystals while marinating in time.
