🕯️The Black Heritage Reference Center Rare Book Spotlight

‘Towards the Preservation of a Heritage’
From the Howard University Museum

This book is a limited publication produced as a celebration of Howard’s inaugural exhibit. Through a “representative sampling” of items and artefacts in the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center, the Museum built an exhibition to highlight the breadth and complexity of Black History.

Being wholly dedicated to this exhibition, it captures a unique perspective on the opening of this exhibit when it was announced. This book is, effectively, a snapshot in time featuring examples from the exhibition itself, a list of acknowledgements and donors who made the exhibition possible, the thought process behind creating the exhibition, and the challenges faced in the creation of this kind of exhibition.

The physical dimensions of the book are worth noting. It is bound in as a quarto—a term meant to define how many folds a sheet of paper went through before it was bound—here it means the book is measured at 8.5” tall and 11.5” wide. While unusual for a book as a reader might expect it, this size is fairly standard for Museum Exhibition showcases!

This exhibition seems to have been merged with the University’s Chadwick A. Boseman Gallery of Art. This book was published and disseminated to the public and to research institutions to get the word out about this exhibition.

This book offers a look at this exhibition through photographs of the artefacts and items featured during the exhibition’s run. It also provides contextual info related to the creation of the exhibit, the research that went into its development, and the hardships faced along the way along the way in getting it approved.

Stop by the Black Heritage Reference Center to take a look at this item today!
