It was a great pleasure hosting AAACE’s Structural Engineering Panel: Behind the Structures: Stories and Challenges on December 11th, 2025.
Our guest speakers guided us through three remarkable NYC projects — a major coastal resiliency effort located in lower Manhattan, an adaptive reuse transformation in Brooklyn, and a supertall tower in Midtown — each highlighting unique engineering trials and lessons learned.

Our deep thanks to:
• Egla Qori PE – AECOM → Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency Project • Niko Preku PE – Elevated Engineering → Religious Temple → Condominium Conversion• Christopher Iftime PE – WSP → Midtown Supertall Concrete Tower

Thank you all who joined us this evening for a great informative panel presentation as well as much needed professional networking and socializing!

Thank you to our sponsors Royal Concrete & Masonry and Kas Metals!

Thank you also to our Vice President Ilir Dulaj for organizing the event and our President Armir Taraj PE for moderating!

Wishing you all Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and a very healthy and prosperous 2026 from all of us here at AAACE!

Cheers!

We’re excited to highlight our upcoming AAACE event this Thursday, “Behind the Structures: Stories and Challenges,” taking place in Chelsea at Jay Conference.
Join us as three structural engineers share real project stories and the challenges behind some of NYC’s most unique and complex builds — from coastal resiliency to adaptive reuse to supertall design.

✨ NEW: After the event, join us for a post-event happy hour nearby — a great opportunity to continue the conversation and connect with fellow AEC professionals.

Panelists:

Egla Qori, PE from AECOM is a Structural Engineer specializing in transportation and coastal resiliency projects across NYC and the U.S. Her work focuses on designing infrastructure that protects vulnerable waterfront communities while navigating complex utilities, multi-agency coordination, and climate-driven performance demands. As her featured project and part of AECOM’s Marine Structures team, she contributed to the Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency program, delivering solutions that balance durability, constructability, and community needs.
Niko Preku from Elevated Engineering NYC is an Associate specializing, among others structural engineering practices, in adaptive reuse and renovation projects, including transforming historic and landmark structures into modern residences. His featured project converts a religious temple into condominiums, highlighting challenges in integrating new systems into existing conditions.
Christopher Iftime from WSP is an Assistant Vice President working on high-rise and supertall steel and concrete towers across NYC. His expertise is on gravity and lateral systems, advanced modeling, and solving the unique engineering challenges that come with designing and constructing his featured project of a Midtown supertall structure.
