***Metamorphosis of Two Islands***

What happens when the landscape of one island holds the cultural memories of another?

Created during her Governors Island residency, Yuyu Demi Chen’s *Metamorphosis of Two Islands* connects Taiwan and New York through material, image, and memory. Chen collected fallen tree bark from Governors Island and transferred photographs of Taiwanese temple rituals—including Ba-Jia-Jiang and the Bombing of Master Handan festival—onto its textured surfaces.

The bark bears the physical traces of Governors Island, while the photographs carry memories of Taiwan. Together, they explore how cultural identity travels across borders, takes root in unfamiliar surroundings, and evolves through encounters with new places.

**About the Artist**
Yuyu Demi Chen is a New York–based photographer and videographer whose interest in photography began in her father’s studio in Taiwan. Her practice spans portraiture, documentary, and fine-art photography, drawing on her experiences across cultures. She earned a master’s degree in Digital Photography from the School of Visual Arts in 2022 and has exhibited internationally.

**New works at House 17!**
Chia-Wei Chang 張家瑋 | *Siliko Series*, 2026**

Created during his residency, Chia-Wei Chang’s *Siliko* series grew from his daily practice of listening to and drawing birds on Governors Island.

Inspired by *Siliq*, a bird associated with divination in Taiwan’s Atayal language, Chang imagines an ancient people who believed birds were gods in disguise. They followed birds’ signs and dreamed of flight. Through disciplined practice, a few achieved their wish, becoming Siliko—a union of human and bird. Chang calls this imagined world “a fictional anthropology.”

The new works include:

• *Bird Divination* — Ink, oil pastel, and acrylic on kraft paper
• *Siliko, the Bird-Man* — Charcoal and colored pencil on kraft paper
• *A Young Siliko 3* — Charcoal and colored pencil on kraft paper, depicting a youth not yet a bird-man, dressed for the harvest festival.

Based in Taipei, Chang works across painting, portraiture, and digital media to explore identity, memory, belonging, and relationships with the natural world.
