Leon Chuang: The Shape of Home
New York Debut Solo Exhibition
TAAC House 17, Nolan Park, Governors Island
The Shape of Home marks Leon Chuang's New York debut solo exhibition at House 17, Nolan Park, Governors Island. Drawing inspiration from migratory birds—particularly the Canada goose, which travels across vast distances in search of seasonal habitats—the exhibition reflects on the universal human experience of movement, belonging, and the search for home.
Coming from a second-generation artist family, Chuang explores themes of migration, memory, and cultural identity through the symbolic image of birds in flight. For many who travel, relocate, or live between cultures, the idea of home becomes fluid—shaped not only by geography, but also by personal experiences, relationships, and memories.
Through a series of interactive sculptural light boxes, projected imagery, and immersive installations, Chuang creates an in-between space where visitors are invited to contemplate their own perceptions of home. Light, shadow, and movement merge to form shifting architectural silhouettes and luminous landscapes, suggesting that home is not a fixed destination but an evolving state of being.
The gallery environment is transformed into a poetic field of illuminated forms, where fragments of houses, nests, and migratory pathways intertwine. By navigating this space, viewers embark on a journey of reflection, exploring how the shape of home is continually redefined through travel, displacement, connection, and imagination.
