A little over a year ago, four people fell victim to a mass shooting, and one of them was our very own 32BJ security officer Aland Etienne. A year later, the Safety and Security Act dedicated to him has officially taken effect, bringing up the wages, benefits and standards of the industry in NYC. May we honor him by making sure security officers are properly compensated and fairly treated for the work they do.

People are shocked at the turnover rates of the private security industry, but when you read the fine print, it’s easy to see why. It’s time we and make sure every security officer is paid a livable wage with better protections!

In spite of only receiving virtual-only training, SEIU security officer Tanya works hard protecting vital community spaces such as public libraries and housing facilities as a security officer. Now, after having been in the industry since the pandemic, she’s advocating for minimum training standards for the city’s unarmed security officers.

Security officer Dyer was on his lunch break when he was murdered at his worksite in Hawaii. Officers have a higher fatality rate than firefighters according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2022); they deserve the workplace protections and compensation that recognizes these dangers. Our hearts are with Dyer’s family.

When officers are overworked and underpaid, everyone’s safety is at risk. We don’t need excessive surveillance or robodogs—we need liveable wages, benefits, adequate de-escalation training, and protections on the job.
