If you find an opossum or other wild animal in your garage it’s no cause for alarm, they’re just looking for a place to escape the cold. Leave the door open and give the animal space to allow them to leave on their own.

Repost from

PSA: DO NOT GIVE WATER TO BABY BIRDS

We know your heart is in the right place—but please do NOT give a baby bird, injured bird, or stressed bird water in the beak. It can accelerate death or lead to aspiration pneumonia, a tragic and preventable outcome.

A bird’s airway opens just behind the tongue. Even a small drop of water can go down the trachea (windpipe) instead of the esophagus, causing the bird to drown or develop pneumonia. Birds have a specific and controlled way of drinking that keeps water out of their lungs. When humans interfere with that process, even with the best intentions, the results are often fatal.

This is one of the many reasons wildlife rehabilitators urge the public to never feed or water wild baby birds. Cold or dehydrated birds need stabilization first—not food or water.

What should you do instead?

Place the bird in a soft towel-lined box with ventilation holes
Keep the box in a warm, dark, and quiet place
Transport the bird to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator as quickly as possible
Why not even a drop of water?
Birds have an airway opening inside their mouths that opens and closes as they breathe. They instinctively know how to drink without letting water enter their airway. A single drop from a dropper or syringe, given by a human, can easily enter the trachea and lead to suffocation or pneumonia.

Sadly, many birds who might have survived never make it to rehab due to water being given too soon.

Thank you to everyone who helps by doing less, not more. Sometimes the kindest action is simply to keep the bird safe, warm, and quiet—until it can be in expert hands.

If you find a bird, especially a baby, please don’t put anything into their mouth! Improperly administered liquid can cause aspiration pneumonia which can be deadly. If you find a bird please keep it in a warm, quiet place and contact your local wildlife rehab center.
