Today is GivingTuesday! ❤️️💙

GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement that aims to unleash the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. What started 11 years ago as a simple idea—a day that encourages people to do good—has now inspired hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

Have you been thinking about becoming a ship captain? Well, it can be difficult work—but extremely rewarding. 🔱

The Captain is the master of a tugboat vessel and is ultimately responsible for all of its operations. They have overall command and control of the navigation, maneuvering, cargo handling, stowage, communications and safe handling of the ship. Captain is the highest rank one can achieve onboard a ship.

Unfortunately, this position is where diversity is harshly lacking within the maritime industry. Roughly 35% of all captains are women and over 75% of all captains are Caucasian. This is why we all need to rock the boat with DEI in the maritime sector. 🚢

Consider applying to our upcoming Deckhand Training Program to begin your expedition into the maritime industry!

Still learning about all the positions on a tugboat? Here's a little about what it means to be a Mate.

You can think of a Mate aboard a tugboat like a second Captain. This position's duties can vary depending on the size of the vessel you’re employed on but typically include supervising the ship, delegating duties to lower ranking crew members, and managing the deck team on board.

As one continues to work their way up to higher positions on a tugboat, becoming a Chief Engineer is an essential role to any vessel large or small. A ship’s Chief Engineer is responsible for routine mechanical maintenance of the tugboat, and this is a brief outline for much of what they do for their vessel.

With an average annual salary starting at six-figures, this position is something a new deckhand can progress towards quickly, given the right training.

According to maritime DEI experts at the Diversity Study Group, the shipping industry's workforce is disproportionately underrepresented in terms of women and minorities at the senior level. It’s our goal to even the playing field by providing support to young, diverse voices entering the workforce.

Last week, Prince William visited the Billion Oyster Projectoject on Governors Island, a nonprofit that has been restoring oysters to the New York Harbor since 2008. Check out the name of the boat the prince rode in on!

The boat, Virginia Maitland Sachs, was specially designed by the Harbor Foundation for the Billion Oyster Project and New York Harbor Schoolool. The money was donated by our founder, Clay Maitland, whose late mother is the namesake of the vessel and our foundation.
