In partnership with 3GNY, the Center for Jewish History recently welcomed guests for a special edition of 3GNY Stories Live: WEDU Wednesdays featuring Elliot Zelinger, who shared the remarkable story of his grandfather, Holocaust survivor Sam Zelinger. Born in Romania in 1924, Sam endured the horrors of Auschwitz before immigrating to New York and rebuilding his life with resilience and determination.

Through personal memories and family reflections, Elliot illuminated not only his grandfather’s survival but also the legacy he passed on to future generations. Elliot serves as a board member of 3GNY - Descendants of Holocaust Survivors, where he has spent the past three years sharing his grandfather’s Holocaust survival story with students across New York City and Long Island. Presented during Jewish American Heritage Month, the program highlighted the enduring impact of Holocaust testimony and the vital role descendants play in preserving and sharing these stories.

This Holocaust Survivor Day marked a meaningful milestone for the Center for Jewish History.

As we celebrated and honored the bravery and courage of Holocaust survivors, we also began installation of From Rubble to Roots: Six Stories of Survival and Resilience, an exhibit that brings to life the journeys of six survivors, each story woven with moments of joy, fear, and extraordinary perseverance.

The exhibition opens June 17th.

While today offers a special opportunity to recognize survivors, our commitment to honoring their memory extends far beyond a single day. We are deeply grateful to carry their stories forward in our spaces, a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of never forgetting.

So many of us are carrying questions we inherited, stories left unfinished, histories left untold. Marcia was brave enough to go searching for answers, and what she found brought her real closure.

This is why we do what we do.

Heidi never got the chance to ask her mother, Sally Schlange Bratt, about the life she lived before and during the war.

Sally, born in Pabianice, Poland, survived Auschwitz-Birkenau and several other concentration camps, walking out of a gas chamber as a child. She was the sole survivor of her family.

She rarely spoke of her past, and passed away in 1985 at just fifty-five. Heidi has been waiting ever since. We're honored to help her find the story her mother never got to tell.
