in 1904, President Roosevelt expanded the boundaries of the Yellowstone National Forest. In 1908, the forest was split into multiple units, some of which either still exist today or have been again reorganized into different units. TR is pictured here at Yellowstone in 1903.

On this date, April 21, in 1909, TR’s African expedition team arrives in Mombasa, after which they will travel through Kenya, Uganda, the Congo, and southern Sudan, collecting specimens for exhibit in American museums.

During a discussion about TR’s efforts to fight Tammany Hall, the Democratic political machine, a visitor asked if there was a Republican political machine in New York, as well.

As a matter of fact, TR took issue with the Republican political machine in New York, and called out political boss William Barnes, Jr., for his role in an “invisible government” based on an “alliance between crooked business and crooked politics.”

So, Barnes sues. TR takes the witness stand for eight days and stands by his statements, providing details proving the corruption of Barnes.

TR wins the case and Barnes’s career as a political boss is over.
