A State Of Emergency has been declared for 8 specific zones of Belize City.

A person can be detained for 30 days, subject to an increase of up to a year and can be held for 7 days without knowing the charge. Minister of National Security Micheal Peyrefitte said quote: “We are not playing with these people!”

The Government of Belize has officially declared a State of Public Emergency for several areas on the Southside and Northside of Belize City, along with parts of the Belize District, effective today, May eighth, 2026.

The proclamation, issued by Governor-General Dame Froyla Tzalam under Statutory Instrument Number Forty-Nine of 2026, states that the emergency measures were enacted after authorities determined that actions being taken, or immediately threatened by certain persons or groups, are likely to endanger public safety.

The State of Emergency applies to multiple designated zones across Belize City, including areas surrounding Freetown Road, Barrack Road, Queen Street, Central American Boulevard, Fabers Road, Cemetery Road, and portions of the Caribbean shoreline. It also extends to communities in the Belize District, including Ladyville, Burrell Boom, Fresh Pond, Buttercup Estates, Bermudian Landing, Lemonal, Isabella Bank, Rancho Dolores, and Double Head Cabbage.

According to the proclamation, the emergency powers will remain in force for up to one month unless revoked earlier, but may be extended by the National Assembly for additional periods if deemed necessary.

The declaration was officially gazetted on May eighth and comes amid ongoing concerns over public safety and criminal activity in parts of Belize City and surrounding communities. /////

**OLD "NEW" NEWS** -- If you haven't been to the Jewel since summer of 2025, now is the time to familiarize yourself with Belize's new currency. The faces on the bills will be recognizable to most "old school" Belizeans. Belize officially switched from Queen Elizabeth II as the official face of Belizean currency on August 4, 2025. The familiar Monarch's face was replaced by two of Belize's also equally recognizable National Heroes: The Rt. Hon. George Cadle Price, Belize's First Prime Minister and Leader of the People's United Party and Hon. Philip Goldson, founding member and leader of the United Democratic Party. So for fierce political opponents, and temperatures can rise when it comes to politics, rest easy because both PUP and UDP are represented. No need to squabble there Red and Blue.

For those who don't know who these founding fathers are, here is a breakdown as quoted from a writeup in travelbelize.org blog.

George Cadle Price, the Father of Independence, led Belize’s peaceful transition from a British colony to a sovereign nation. As the country’s first Prime Minister, Price dedicated his life to building a unified and independent Belize. His philosophy was rooted in social justice, equality, and nationalism. His leadership through the People’s United Party was pivotal in achieving Belize’s independence on September 21, 1981. The $5, $20, and $100 notes will feature his portrait.

Philip Stanley Wilberforce Goldson, the Father of Democracy, was a journalist, lawyer, and political activist. He co-founded The Belize Billboard, a newspaper that fearlessly voiced people’s concerns. Goldson was a founding member of the People’s United Party before eventually leading the opposition, United Democratic Party. He fought for education, freedom of expression, and democratic governance, which laid the foundation for Belize’s modern political landscape. His image will appear on the $2, $10, and $50 notes.
