Shorewalkers

Shorewalkers Shorewalkers is a non-profit walking group dedicated to promoting and preserving NYC’s waterfront.

Shorewalkers is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, environmental organization launched in 1982 that is dedicated to promoting and preserving New York City’s waterfront, as well as raising awareness of its shorelines by leading invigorating hikes throughout the metropolitan area. Our signature event is The Great Saunter, a 32-mile walk around the shoreline of Manhattan, which takes place the first Saturday in

May. And during the pandemic, we launched a second one, the Virtual Great Saunter to enable members to walk 32 miles anywhere in the world, in any number of segments. We are funded entirely by annual membership dues as well as fees for our signature events and all our hike leaders and staff are volunteers who are passionately dedicated to advancing the organization’s mission and goals.

I am originally from Austria, though have been living in the U.S. for the past 14 years. I have always been physically active: skiing from an early age, an avid runner and hiker, and count my 85-year-old mom, who swims and walks daily as my inspiration. So naturally when I moved to New York, I joine...

Last January a group of Shorewalkers heading east to Austria to participate in the Burgenland Extrem, an endurance walking event - much like the Great Saunter - that invites participants to test their stamina by walking up to 75 miles around Lake Neusiedl. It's not a race, instead celebrating fitness and community. Board member, Sigrid Stropnik facilitated the connection and a great time was had by all! Clearly the start of a beautiful friendship! 🇺🇸 🇦🇹 🥾 Read more about it here 👇🏼

In late January, much of Europe settles into its coldest, quietest period. And yet, at a small lake in Austria’s easternmost province of Burgenland, about one hour south of Vienna, something remarkable takes place. Lake Neusiedl (Fertő/Neusiedlersee), a UNESCO World Heritage site, is known for it...

Training has a way of revealing areas of our body that might need extra TLC. These hot spots aren’t barriers to completion – just situations to prepare for! For example:

✅ If you know your knees might get sore or swollen, bring a soft brace to put on as added support. Ditto for your back.
✅ Blisters a concern? Try taping sensitive areas with moleskin or Compseed, or consider toe socks to reduce abrasion.
✅ Sore or tired feet? Bring an extra set of socks to change into at the midway point and most importantly, make sure your shoes fit securely and comfortably for long distance walking and have broken them in. You might even consider switching to hiking sandals if your feet tend to swell.

Everyone who walks the Great Saunter has a story: why they choose to do it, what they have learned along the way, how every time is different. Our finishers include people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, the common bond being their love of walking. Chat with former Saunterers to gather insights and come prepared.

Remember: you don’t need to complete the full distance to be a Great Saunter-er. Just show up, enjoy the journey and give it your best shot!

About Shorewalkers

Shorewalkers is a non-profit group dedicated to promoting and preserving New York City’s surrounding shores. Our environmental and outdoors group has been a leading advocate for projects such as the development of the Grand Harlem River Park, a park larger and more diverse than Central Park, the 330-mile Hudson River Trail, and the opening to the public of Hudson River property Shorewalkers was instrumental in developing the Batt to Bear Trail, 56 miles from the Battery to Bear Mountain.

Since 1982, Shorewalkers has led invigorating walkers exploring varied and extensive shore areas in and around New York City. Shorewalkers, and its premier annual event, The Great Saunter, which takes place the first Saturday in May each year, have won praise and recognition from civic leaders and New York State Legislators.
