On Thursday, June 25th, join the Youth Alliance for Housing at the Rent Guidelines Board hearing to demand that tenants receive no increases. Doors open at 6pm at El Museo del Barrio!

Tenants in this city are drowning in debt, wages are stagnant, our children cannot afford to live in the city they want to grow old in. That ain’t right. When we organize, we win! YAH is organizing to demand a rent rollback for 2.4+ million tenants covered by rent stabilization.

All month YAH will be rallying & testifying before the Rent Guidelines Board (RGB) for a rent rollback (decrease in rent) for rent stabilized housing in NYC. Some highlights from The Bronx hearing yesterday:

SAFI:
“We currently have 118 violations, & have had hundreds for years. And in the middle of living like this, they chose to evict us. We’re RENT BURDENED and are paying more than ⅓ of our income on rent and maintenance, this is a record year for peoples’ burdened rent. I love my community, I love Queens and I love my city. My neighbors & I will not be displaced…The people who built this city CANNOT afford a rent increase…. Did you just hear the tenant who said that their 14 year old is excited to work to help with the rent? …our children deserve to stay in school. Our children deserve to live in our city. They should not be worried about paying the fu***ng rent. ROLLBACK THE RENT NOW!”

“My uncle admitted to me recently that he wasn’t able to afford his rent anymore & he needed my help to pay it. He has poured his heart into this city as a yellow cab driver up until his retirement a year ago… but now 72% of his social security check goes towards keeping a roof over his head.
My uncle is my only surviving family member from Cote D’ivoire. And my only connection left to my father…I do what I can to pay his rent every month, but that isn’t sustainable either. I, like many other New Yorkers can barely afford to pay my rent, so I ask all of you up there - can you imagine having to pay two NYC rents every month? All on your own? Stop making New York City so unlivable, financially prohibitive, & unsustainable for its inhabitants. ROLL BACK THE RENT”

❤️‍🔥 We held various tenant meetings where we strategized and continued to move work forward in order to build greater

❤️‍🔥 Attended a day of action at the NY state capitol with ! Evictions are violent, traumatic, and inhumane. They are not inevitable. Landlords sue and the state evicts. Albany has the power to stop this violence by passing statewide Right to Counsel, Clean Hands, and a Winter Eviction Moratorium.

❤️‍🔥 YAH leaders spoke at a rally alongside tenants and community groups to announce the reintroduction of the Community Opportunity to Purchase Act (COPA) in the New York City Council
