Operation Resilient Living & Innovation - ORLI+

Operation Resilient Living & Innovation - ORLI+ The mission of ORLI+ is to foster the development of resilience in communities vulnerable to environmental risk and disruption.

Resilient Design Agency fostering resilience in communities through innovative approaches to engagement and re-imagining the role of design professionals in the resiliency discussion. Our approach leverages strategies of research, engagement, empowerment and design to move towards a more resilient and sustainable future. ORLI+ operates on four core principles: Research, Engagement, Empowerment and

Design. Researching and disseminating strategies for innovative approaches to achieve resilience in communities is crucial for creating a global network of grounded solutions. Reimagining the role of design professionals and processes through engagement facilitates a more inclusive, integrated, and resilient dialog. Empowering communities to invest in their futures to pursue living strategies, initiatives and projects based on their local situation and needs produces sustained forward movement towards resilient visions and plans. Designing resilient solutions for communities facing future disturbances and disasters, both natural and man made, is paramount in catalyzing change and action. These core principles drive the operation of the organization.

This spring and summer, advocates like you drove 10,000 comments on New York’s plan for our climate future—and our voices made a HUGE difference! Together, we forced the state to contend with our demands for environmental justice for Black, brown, Indigenous, and working New Yorkers.

On October 12 at 5 pm, join NY Renews for a mass call to assess where we are now in the Climate Law implementation process and how we can advocate for our state to adopt the Climate Justice Working Group’s recommendations moving forward. It’s up to us to ensure that these recommendations become a reality for communities across our state! Join us: bit.ly/PCAC1012

We are pleased to announce the call for contributions to our 8th annual Civic Art Lab! 🌱💚

Submissions due by Sept 15th, 2022

Acceptance notification by Sept 29th, 2022

This year’s Civic Art Lab explores the notion of contested spaces through the lens of sustainability, creative placemaking and placekeeping. As it pertains to this year’s theme, a contested space can be a site of resistance, social activism, art, urban design, remembrance, and more. Many ephemeral sites of environmental and social movements have grown into brick-and-mortar community gathering places, public green spaces, safe spaces, and sustained places of protest. In a global political climate that increasingly disregards the urgency of sustainability and humanitarian challenges, Civic Art Lab 2022’s two-day lab welcomes proposals for virtual presentations and in-person NYC-based tours of locations at the center and margins of community-driven sustainability and action.

This is the last week to submit public comments on New York State’s disadvantaged community (DAC) criteria! This is a key step in correctly identifying the neighborhoods in NYS that need immediate reductions in pollution and toxic waste, investments in renewable energy, and other benefits as soon as possible. Make your voice heard and help secure the benefits owed to your community!

Rampant wildfires, deadly heat waves, violent storms, melting sea ice, flash floods. The climate crisis is getting worse before our eyes, and it’s only going to keep getting worse unless our leaders find the courage to act.

Join us Feb. 22 at noon for a social media storm to send state and federal elected officials a clear message: inaction isn’t an option!

For too long, our neighbors on the frontlines of the climate crisis have lacked the investments they’ve needed and are hit first and worst by our incoming disasters. We’re proud to support in the demand for $15 billion in NY’s 2022 budget for climate, jobs, and justice. , , and need to act now. NY can lead the country to build a green and care economy with thousands of good, green jobs and direct investments and jobs to disadvantaged and marginalized communities. From upgrading public housing energy to expanding unemployment benefits, $15 billion will jumpstart a just transition and put power back in our communities’ hands.

Pratt Earth Action Week is fast approaching. Join us next week!

KEY NOTES ON DISASTER PREPAREDNESS AND CLIMATE RESILIENCE series.

Reflecting on our community’s experiences and response during the most recent climate events, this semester will center around keynote discussions to reckon with our current systems for disaster response and ideate on how we can collectively build better and more resilient frameworks for future climate events. The week’s programming will continue to address the intersecting crises of climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the racial and social justice protests that have brought into relief systemic inequalities and unsustainable systems.

Coordinated events throughout the week will provide an architecture for conversation, debate, and development of design solutions toward change with a focus on the relationship between climate change and mental health.

Rather than a single keynote, we will be hosting a week-long symposium of “key notes” building on the Pratt community and our local communities’ experiences, institutional preparedness, the role of the artist and designer, and resources and ideation for improvements in response to recent and expected future climate events.

As the Gulf South experiences Hurricane Ida on the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, we must amplify the work and voices of organizations and communities on the frontlines. Please consider a donation to GCCLP] storm relief fund: bit.ly/StormReliefFund.

From GCCLP] statement on Hurricane Ida:

“Hurricane Ida is yet another sobering reminder that the climate crisis is already upon us. The most recent IPCC report finally acknowledged what we have known for the last sixteen years: severe weather and devastating storms are a direct result of our changing climate. While all of us are impacted by these storms, for far too long we have continued to see that Black, Indigenous, immigrant, and poor folks are the most marginalized during preparation and recovery efforts.

Our communities are on the frontlines of the climate crisis: we bear the brunt of flooding and disaster, we endure the harm of fossil fuel industries that have profited and caused this crisis, and we continue to see inequitable disaster recovery take place. In spite of these challenges, our communities are an incredible source of resistance, power, and strength. We are still here.”
