Philoptochos

Philoptochos The Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society, Inc. over 90 years of Philanthropic Endeavors.

The Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society, Inc., as the philanthropic heart of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, has for 90 years undertaken a multitude of philanthropic programs to aid the poor, the sick, and the elderly. The Society was established in November 1931, by the late Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras I, who was then serving as Archbishop of North and South America. The st

ructure of Philoptochos includes the National Board, Metropolis Boards and Chapters in the parishes of the Archdiocese. There are over 400 Philoptochos Chapters and 26,000 members throughout the United States. Since the late 1950's, upon the recommendation of Archbishop Iakovos, Philoptochos has placed an increased emphasis on the implementation of important programs to benefit the Greek Orthodox community, including, but not limited to, institutions of the Church, the philanthropies of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and assistance to Greek and Greek Orthodox families. Involvement in social and moral issues encouraged the establishment of several committees to address topics such as child abuse, domestic violence, homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse and aging. Since 1987, the National Philoptochos office has employed a professional Social Worker, engaged in assisting the Greek Orthodox community in the United States as well as Greek and Cypriot nationals. The Department of Social Services is a very important, vital element of our organization. The mission of the Department is to improve the quality of life of those in need, in a way that maintains the dignity and self-respect of the individuals. Through confidential and professional services, the office provides outreach, education, information, support, intervention, motivation, advocacy, financial assistance and referral to local and broader resources. Καλό Μήνα! Happy June from National Philoptochos! 🌿

June is here, and so is the countdown. In just a few weeks, women from across the country will gather in Cleveland for our National Philoptochos Convention - and we couldn't be more excited to come together, worship, learn, and celebrate the extraordinary work of this sisterhood.

Whether you're joining us in person or cheering us on from home, this month is for you. Thank you for being the heart of Philoptochos. 💜

On Saturday May 30, 2026, our National Philoptochos Board gathered over Zoom for a National Board Meeting — and while we may have been spread across screens, the spirit in the meeting was anything but distant!

We opened in prayer and reflection led by His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Nazianzos, setting the tone for a morning rooted in faith and purpose.

From there, our National President Debbie George shared her President’s Report — reminding us that the work we do today shapes the Philoptochos of tomorrow. As she shared from Colossians 3:23–24: “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” A verse that speaks directly to who we are and why we serve.

The board received updates from 1st VP Anita Kartalopoulos, National Treasurer Anna Vedouras, and presentations from Philippa Condakes (National Philoptochos Secretary), Cynthia Kezos, Paulette Geanacopoulos (National Philoptochos Social Services Director), and Katherine Clark (Marketing & Communications Associate) — each one a reflection of the depth and dedication this organization carries.

Thoughtful questions, meaningful conversation, and a sisterhood showing up — even through a screen. The next time we gather will be in person at our National Convention in Cleveland, and we cannot wait. 🤍

On the holy feast of Pentecost, we celebrate the “birthday” of our Church by the living presence of the Holy Spirit.

On the day of Pentecost, the fearful disciples of Christ became the Holy Apostles of our Church. Confusion was transformed into clarity, and division into unity. The same Holy Spirit who descended upon them continues to dwell in us today from the day of our holy baptism, guiding, strengthening, and renewing our lives.

Holy Pentecost invites each of us to ask: Am I open to the power of the grace of the Holy Spirit? Do I allow Him to shape my words, my decisions, and my relationships?

Let us treat this holy feast as something alive and personal. The Holy Spirit is at work in the Holy Sacraments of our Church, in our homes, in our communities, and in our hearts. If we make space for Him, He will bring grace where there is weakness, peace where there is anxiety, courage where there is fear, and love where there is distance.

May this Pentecost be for all of us a moment of renewal, a quiet but heartfelt return to the presence of God, who never ceases to come to us. Let us seek the presence of the power and the energies of the Holy Spirit in prayer, in the Holy Sacraments, and in every act of love, forgiveness, and humility that we offer to one another.

With paternal love and prayers for all our members,
+ Bishop Athenagoras of Nazianzos
