11 years ago today, marriage equality became the law of the land in the United States. 🏳️‍🌈 The legal foundation for this milestone was established in 1967, when the Supreme Court decided Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015 and directly cited Loving v. Virginia.

The ongoing effort to affirm marriage rights continues today, as seen in Virginia, where the state legislature has finalized a referendum for the November 2026 ballot to officially remove an unenforceable 2006 same-sex marriage ban that remained in the text of the state constitution (read more here: https://www.wsls.com/news/local/2026/06/18/virginia-marriage-equality/).

From Loving Day to this anniversary of the U.S. legalization of same-sex marriage, June is a time when look back at the history and ongoing evolution of the freedom to marry and love. Happy Pride Month! ❤️✨

Virginia voters will decide this November whether to remove a same-sex marriage ban that has remained in the state’s constitution for nearly two decades, despite marriage equality being legal nationwide since 2015.

Today is Juneteenth, a day of deep joy that marks the anniversary of the last enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas learning of their freedom—two long years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth was a guiding light for Loving Day’s origin story, and it stands as a powerful reminder of the progress we must protect. Happy Juneteenth! 🎉✨

Yesterday, the town of Town of Erie, Colorado recognized Friday, June 12, 2026, on the 59th anniversary of the unanimous Supreme Court decision, as: “LOVING DAY”! Thank you for sharing this with us, Erie! We hope you had a very lovely Loving Day!

Communities came together to support Mildred and Richard Loving's right to get married as an in*******al couple. Their Supreme Court case struck down all U.S. laws against in*******al marriage on June 12, 1967. Today, communities come together on the anniversary of their case, known as Loving Day. Now a global tradition, it's a day of visibility, education, and community.
