Our next member spotlight is Ziya Tarapore! 🌊

Ziya has an upcoming Solo Show at 47-A, Mumbai, Nov.14-Dec.13.
Ziyas artist statement:

Paper sculpture has been my chosen artform for last 10 years. I worked in found paper, discarded packaging material and scraps. But 3 years ago, heartbroken by my father’s rapid decline, I dissolved his worn shirt into paper pulp and sculpted it as a remembrance.
What emerged was The Sadra Project — a body of work rooted in ancient Zoroastrian teachings on Nature and human kindness, made from the worn discarded sadras (sacred muslin undershirts) of people who have shaped my life across six decades. The energy held in sacred daily clothing is something you can feel in every piece.
Crashing ocean waves. A Tree of Life stitched from sacred seams. Flowers captured in pigmented pulp. The Sadra Project transforms worn sadras into paper sculptural works that speak to our ancient teachings on preserving this planet. Each garment carries the energy of a life lived in devotion — including my father’s. Collecting the imbued energy from people integral to my life across sixty years has become something I never anticipated: a profound act of remembrance.

Thank you Ziya for sharing for work with us!

Rooted in Fiber: Celebrating 40 Years of  Hand Papermaking Magazine

North American Hand Papermakers invites you to Rooted in Fiber, our annual conference featuring demos, workshops, lectures, and discussions led by Papermaking artists, scholars and practitioners. Rooted in Fiber focuses on relationships with the fibers that connect us. At this conference we will examine the literal and figurative connective strands that make us Papermakers, as well as the vitality that stems from interconnection. We dig into the radical roots of hand papermaking beyond a medium for making – in celebrating 40 Years of Hand Papermaking Magazine we come together planting seeds for paper, people, and beyond. Join us this September 24-27, in Baltimore, Maryland, for a conference highlighting the tactility, community, and strength of Hand Papermaking in 2026.

NAHP Mail Art Exchange! ✉️

This year, we are asking participants to reflect on relationships to the plants and natural fibers that shape our environment, work, and relationships.

How the Mail Art Exchange works is the papermaker will make an edition of four (4) pieces of paper with a maximum size of 4x6x1/4 inches. The papermaker will then mail the pieces to the collaborating artist and they will intervene on the paper, maintaining the maximum size. The artist will then ship 3 of the 4 pieces to NAHP’s address, and keep the remaining piece for themselves.

NAHP will ship each papermaker a copy of the finished piece they made the paper for at NAHP’s expense, using regular mail service for letters (including for international mail).

We hope this project continues to help foster connections across the wide world of papermaking. Thank you for participating in this essential NAHP program and supporting members in their ability to attend the annual conference year after year.

Our first member spotlight is Harper Folsom!

Harper is an interdisciplinary artist in Iowa City. She works with handmade paper, printmaking techniques, book forms, and collage. Her practice is grounded in treating physical objects and their embedded histories with tenderness. Acts of collecting, cherishing, and archiving are integral to her work, manifesting in both holdable, intimate objects and site-specific installations.

Her current body of work reflects on childhood, and the way her own memories morph into family history—communal, multi-generational memories living beside each other, happening all at once. She will graduate with her MFA from the University of Iowa Center for the Book in May 2026.

Harper is having her MFA thesis exhibition at Sacred Collective in Iowa City, IA, from April 13-18. She will also be hosting a recycled papermaking workshop during the exhibition on the 14th.

Thank you Harper for letting us share your talents! 🌀
