UN Chief on winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize - Security Council Media Stakeout | United Nations

Remarks to the press by António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, congratulating the winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace prize, Navanethem “Navi” Pillay.

I warmly congratulate “Navi” Pillay on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

For decades, she has been a champion of international law and human rights, and a steadfast, independent voice of justice amidst some of the most historic international legal cases of our time.

From her work in South Africa defending Nelson Mandela and others who stood up against the oppressive apartheid regime…

To her role as an international judge and President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda on cases relating to international crimes, including the genocide in Rwanda

To her tenure as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights…

And to chairing the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

She has shown that the force of law must prevail over the law of force and that defending human rights is the surest safeguard against injustice.

In its citation, the Nobel Committee reminded the world that peace must be built on lasting principles, not the will of the powerful.

Today’s prize is a tribute to all those working to uphold and defend international law, the rule of law and human rights, and secure peace, justice and human dignity.

Violence against women and girls - Press Briefing | United Nations

Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls Reem Alsalem called for end to violence against older women, warns age must never diminish protection of women’s rights

Alsalem addressed the press on her report about main forms and manifestations of violence experienced by older women and their intersection with other grounds

She said that older women around the world face violence, exploitation and neglect, yet remain largely invisible in laws, policies, data and services designed to protect women from violence and older persons’ rights.

She called for urgent action by States to ensure that women’s rights to live free from violence does not diminish with age, in her latest report to the UN General Assembly.

An estimated 664 million women were aged 60 or older in 2025, a number projected to reach 1.13 billion by 2050.

Alsalem’s report examines violence against older women as a distinct and intersectional forms of violence arising from the interaction of sex-based discrimination, ageism and inequalities accumulated throughout women’s lives.

The report identifies physical, psychological, sexual and economic violence, as well as coercive control, neglect, abandonment and technology-facilitated violence.

It outlines that older women may face exploitation of pensions and property, digital exclusion, denial of healthcare or assistive devices and barriers to reporting and justice, and notes that violence can occur in homes, communities, care institutions, prisons and crisis and conflict settings.

The report emphasizes that older women may be excluded from services and data, while sexual violence against them remains under-recognized.

Alsalem found that widows, migrant and stateless women, rural women, women with disabilities, women in institutional care and women affected by conflict and humanitarian crises are particularly at risk.

The Special Rapporteur highlighted decisions concerning medical treatment and the end of life.

Alsalem urged States to explicitly recognize and address violence against older women in laws, national strategies and violence prevention and response programmes, collect age- and sex-disaggregated data, strengthen accessible reporting, protection, justice and redress and ensure training for law enforcement, judicial, health and social service professionals.

African Union & UN Cooperation on Peace & Security in Africa - Briefing | United Nations

“The scale and complexity of today's challenges demand a stronger partnership,” the UN envoy to the African Union told the Security Council.

Presenting the Secretary-General’s report on the UN-AU partnership, Special Representative Parfait Onanga-Anyanga called for a partnership “that anticipates crises, addresses the pressures that sustain them and converts shared commitments into prompt, predictable and accountable action.”

He said the report “records important achievements in the AU-UN partnership, while also confronting the more complex and interconnected peace and security landscape.”

The report is Secretary-General António Guterres’ last on the topic before he leaves office at the end of December.

UN Chief receives Highest Civil award in Pakistan | United Nations

António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, receives Pakistan's highest civil award, the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, on behalf of the United Nations, during a special ceremony in Islamabad with Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari.

The Secretary-General also accepted an honorary award from the President on behalf of the United Nations today. He also visited the National Disaster Management Authority and received a briefing on Pakistan's disaster preparedness and resilience. He wrapped up a visit to the headquarters of the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan, otherwise known as UNMOGIP. There, he paid tribute to the mission and to the UN peacekeepers serving around the world. This was followed by a meeting with the country team in Islamabad.

On Wednesday, the Secretary-General will be meeting with Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and have further engagement in Islamabad

During his visit, Guterres also held discussions with Mohammad Ishaq Dar, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan. The Secretary-General also met with President Asif Ali Zardari, with whom he discussed regional and international issues.

UN Chief on World Habitat Day 2026 | United Nations

Message from António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, read by Anacláudia Rossbach, Under-Secretary-General and Executive-Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) at the World Habitat Day 2026 - "Adequate Housing for All" (Muscat, Oman).

"Adequate housing is the foundation of dignity, security, and opportunity.

Yet more than 3 billion people are denied this universal human right. Over 1 billion live in informal settlements and slums, and many more experience homelessness or have been displaced by conflict, disasters, and climate change.

Investing in adequate housing and transforming informal settlements reduces poverty, tackles inequality, builds climate resilience, and fosters peaceful and inclusive societies.

This demands coordinated action at every level, with national and local governments shaping bold policies, building partnerships, and grounding decisions in sound data. The international financial architecture must also be reformed to mobilize the adequate, predictable, and affordable financing developing countries need to invest in housing at scale.

On this World Habitat Day, let us treat housing as a public good and build a world where everyone has a place to call home."

António Guterres (UN Secretary-General) on World Food Day 2026

Food is a basic human right.
Yet around 645 million people faced hunger last year.
And nearly 2.7 billion people cannot afford a healthy diet.
Overlapping shocks and crises are adding to these pressures.
Disrupting production and supply chains.
Driving up the cost of food and fertilizer.
And putting nutritious diets further out of reach for millions.
We have the knowledge, technology and capacity to feed the world.

It's time to use it.
This year's theme for World Food Day is "Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow."
By harnessing data, innovation, and technology, including artificial intelligence, to ensure everyone can access nutritious food.

By mobilizing finance to make nutritious food more available and affordable, especially for developing countries.

Nuclear Weapons: 'Risk of nuclear use is rising' - UN Chief | United Nations

The UN Secretary-General warned that the safeguards built over decades to contain nuclear dangers are “breaking down,” just as the risk of nuclear use is rising.

Speaking at a high-level plenary meeting of the General Assembly marking the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons in New York, António Guterres said, “The rattling of nuclear sabers is growing louder. Advances in technology are increasing the odds of mistake and miscalculation.”

Guterres pointed to the expiry of the New START Treaty earlier this year. “For the first time in more than half a century, there are no binding limits on strategic nuclear arsenals,” he noted.

“The United States and the Russian Federation must negotiate a successor framework to New START,” the Secretary-General said.

Guterres called on states, “Let us replace threats with dialogue. Let us replace the arms race with arms control. Let us replace paralysis with concrete action.”

“International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is devoted to furthering the objective of mobilizing international efforts towards achieving the common goal of a nuclear weapon free world,” General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman also told the meeting.

AI: World needs open-source AI to defend itself - Hugging Face Briefing | United Nations

Chief Executive Officer of Hugging Face, Clément Delangue, made a case for open-source AI models.

Delangue said, “cyber-attacks and risks may increasingly come from proprietary models behind closed doors, while much of the defense may end up being powered by open-source tools because they are less restricted, more privacy preserving and orders of magnitude more affordable for organizations across the globe. The world needs open-source AI more than ever to defend itself.”

He said, “even though we were the victims of this cyber-attack, we believe more strongly than ever that AI will be beneficial to cybersecurity and make the world safer, just as major technology before it. We were attacked by AI, but more importantly, we defended ourselves with AI.”

AI: Managing risks has global scale - Anthropic Briefing | United Nations

The Chief Executive Officer of Anthropic, Dario Amodei, said, “managing these risks is ultimately bigger than any one company, and it has an industry wide and global scale.”

Amodei said, “I believe that this is the most important global security issue facing the world today. For all the differences of the people in this room, we must put aside those differences in order to confront this global opportunity and global threat that is being presented to us at the same time.”
